Dubai International Airport (DXB) is gradually installing a new generation of high-tech security scanners across its terminals. The key change for passengers is that these advanced machines are designed to screen hand luggage without requiring travellers
to remove electronic devices like laptops and tablets, or their limited-size liquid containers. This move aims to eliminate one of the most common hassles and slowdowns at airport security, making the journey from check-in to the departure gate smoother and more efficient for millions of passengers. The upgrade is part of a continuous programme to replace older equipment throughout the airport.
The Technology Behind the Convenience
The new scanners use advanced imaging technology, sometimes referred to as Computed Tomography (CT) scanning, similar to what is used in the medical field. This allows the system to create detailed 3D images of the contents inside a passenger's bag. Security staff and sophisticated AI-powered systems can then inspect these high-resolution images from multiple angles to identify items without them needing to be physically removed and placed in a separate tray. This gives screeners a much clearer picture of what’s inside, enhancing security while simultaneously speeding up the process. In some cases, the new technology is also intended to reduce the need for passengers to remove shoes and belts.
When and Where Can You Expect This?
The rollout is already underway. According to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, some of the new machines are already installed and operational. However, the implementation is described as a "gradual, ongoing programme of continuous upgrade" rather than a single switch-over. This means the new scanners are being introduced across DXB's terminals, including as part of refurbishment work in Terminal 1, not just in one specific area. Because the rollout is phased, travellers will encounter a mix of old and new systems for some time. The ultimate goal is to replace all older machines to ensure every customer experiences the same level of convenience.
What This Means for Your Next Trip
For now, the most important advice is to listen carefully to the instructions given by security staff at the checkpoint. If you are in a lane with the new scanners, you will likely be told you can leave approved items in your bag. If you are in a lane with the older equipment, you will still need to follow the traditional procedure of removing laptops and liquids. It is also crucial to remember that this new screening technology does not change the rules about the quantity of liquids you can carry. Dubai Airports' guidance still specifies that liquids, gels, and aerosols in hand luggage must be in containers of 100ml or less, all fitting within a single one-litre transparent bag. Always pack as if you might need to remove your items, keeping electronics and liquids easily accessible just in case.
