Earth Orbit (LEO) which circle the planet and revisit a location only at intervals, a satellite in geosynchronous orbit moves at the same speed as the Earth's rotation. This allows EOS-05 to remain seemingly fixed over the Indian subcontinent, providing a constant, unblinking watch over a vast area. This capability has earned it the nickname "Eye in the Sky," promising near-continuous monitoring of the Indian landmass and surrounding oceans.
What Makes EOS-05 a 'First' for India?
While India has operated satellites in geostationary orbit for decades, those have primarily been for weather forecasting (like the INSAT series) or communications. Its dedicated high-resolution imaging satellites, such as the Cartosat and RISAT series, have traditionally operated in LEO, just a few hundred kilometres up. These LEO satellites provide very detailed images but can take days to pass over the same spot again. EOS-05 is a game-changer because it is India's first dedicated imaging satellite in this high orbit. Its primary mission is not weather or communication, but persistent, high-frequency imaging. This success is particularly significant following the loss of a similar satellite, EOS-03, during a launch failure in 2021, making the successful deployment of EOS-05 a major technical and strategic milestone.
The Power of Persistent Monitoring
The key advantage of EOS-05 is not necessarily finer detail—its distance means its resolution is lower than LEO satellites—but its unmatched temporal awareness. The satellite is designed to image the entire Indian landmass roughly every 30 minutes and can be steered to focus on specific areas of interest, like a developing cyclone or a forest fire, for updates as frequently as every 5 minutes. This capability is invaluable for tracking rapidly evolving events. Equipped with multispectral and hyperspectral sensors, it can see beyond what a normal camera can, analysing different wavelengths of light to distinguish between crop types, water bodies, and vegetation health. This provides a richer, more dynamic picture of the country's landscape.
