The New Cost of a Standard Passport
The government has revised passport fees for the first time in nearly 14 years, citing rising operational costs and enhanced security features. As of July 1, 2026, the fee for renewing a standard 36-page passport under the normal scheme is ₹2,500, a steep
jump from the previous ₹1,500. For those who travel frequently and require a 60-page jumbo booklet, the cost has risen from ₹2,000 to ₹3,500. This increase means a family of four renewing their passports together is now looking at a baseline expense of ₹10,000, turning what was a minor cost into a significant financial consideration that needs to be planned for well in advance.
The High Price of Urgency: The Tatkaal Scheme
The gap between normal and urgent processing has widened considerably, making procrastination a costly mistake. The Tatkaal scheme, designed for those who need a passport in a hurry, now comes with a much heavier price tag. The fee for a 36-page Tatkaal passport has been increased to ₹5,000, up from ₹3,500. A 60-page Tatkaal passport will set you back ₹6,000. This means opting for the express service essentially doubles the cost of a normal passport. This significant premium underscores the financial benefit of planning ahead. An urgent, unforeseen trip could force a family into thousands of rupees in extra fees that could have been avoided by simply starting the renewal process a few months earlier.
Don't Forget the Hidden and Indirect Costs
The official application fee is only part of the story. Several other expenses can add up, turning the renewal process into a more expensive affair than anticipated. Applicants often have to travel to a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) for their appointment, which can involve costs for transport, especially for those living far from a major centre. There are also minor but cumulative costs for printing documents and taking passport-sized photographs. Furthermore, the financial risk of a delayed passport cannot be overstated. Missing a flight, a crucial business meeting, or a university admission deadline due to an expired or delayed passport can result in financial losses far exceeding the cost of the renewal itself.
How to Plan and Save on Your Next Renewal
Treating your passport renewal as a planned expense is the key to managing the cost effectively. The most crucial step is to act early. Indian passports can be renewed up to one year before their expiry date, so there is no need to wait until the last minute. By applying under the normal scheme, you instantly save at least ₹2,500 per person compared to the Tatkaal option. Always use the official Passport India website for your application. This allows you to avoid third-party agents who charge unnecessary fees for services you can easily complete yourself online. For families, try to coordinate renewal appointments to minimise travel costs. A single trip to the PSK for multiple family members is far more economical than several individual visits. Finally, check for concessions; a 10% discount on the fee is available for senior citizens (above 60) and children below 8 years of age.
