A Landmark Investment in Connectivity
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit three significant multi-tracking railway projects with a combined investment of ₹10,783 crore. This initiative is a major step towards modernising
India's railway infrastructure, focusing on increasing the capacity of some of the nation's most critical rail corridors. The projects will add approximately 656 kilometres of new railway lines, aiming to improve mobility, enhance operational efficiency, and provide more reliable train services for both passengers and freight. By adding more tracks to busy routes, the plan is designed to reduce chronic congestion, allowing for more flexible and timely train operations.
Spotlight on the Five Beneficiary States
This ambitious expansion will directly benefit five states: West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. The projects are strategically located to strengthen vital links across eastern and central India. The approved works include the construction of a fourth line along the Kharagpur-Jharsuguda and Katni-Pendra Road sections, as well as a third line for the Bilaspur (Uslapur)-Pendra Road corridor. These specific routes are crucial arteries for the country's industrial and mineral transport, and their expansion is expected to have a ripple effect across the regional economy. In total, the expansion will cover 14 districts within these five states.
Fueling Economic Growth and Industry
Beyond just laying new tracks, this expansion is a strategic move to bolster India's industrial backbone. The targeted corridors are essential for transporting key commodities like coal, cement, iron, and steel. The government estimates that the added capacity will facilitate the movement of an additional 27 million tonnes of freight annually. This boost is critical for energy production, construction, and manufacturing sectors that rely on the efficient flow of raw materials. The projects are aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on creating integrated and efficient logistics networks to reduce transportation costs and support India's overall economic growth.
Connecting People and Unlocking Regions
The expansion promises to transform daily life for a vast population. The new lines are expected to improve connectivity for approximately 4,790 villages, home to around 5.6 million people. For residents in these areas, better rail access means easier travel to major cities for work, education, and healthcare. Furthermore, the projects are set to enhance access to numerous religious, cultural, and tourist destinations, including the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Amarkantak Temple, and the Shri Kshetra Jagannath Temple near Jharsuguda. This improved connectivity can boost local tourism and related economies. During the construction phase alone, the projects are anticipated to generate significant employment opportunities.
A Greener Path Forward
Shifting more freight from road to rail is also a key part of India's environmental strategy. Rail transport is significantly more energy-efficient for moving large volumes over long distances. By increasing railway capacity, the government aims to encourage a greater share of goods to be transported via trains, which can lead to a substantial reduction in fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions. According to official estimates, these projects are expected to help reduce oil imports and lower carbon dioxide emissions, contributing to the nation's climate goals while modernising its transport infrastructure.
