What Makes Amrit Bharat Trains Different?
Before diving into the new routes, it's worth understanding what the Amrit Bharat Express offers. Designed as an affordable, non-AC alternative for long-distance travel, these trains are a significant upgrade for passengers in sleeper and unreserved classes.
A key feature is the 'push-pull' configuration, where locomotives are placed at both ends of the train. This allows for faster acceleration and deceleration, reducing overall journey time. For passengers, the experience is enhanced with cushioned berths, foldable snack tables, mobile charging sockets for every passenger, and modern, hygienic toilets. Safety features include CCTV cameras in all coaches and a sealed gangway design for smoother, safer movement between coaches.
Major Boost for Mumbai Connectivity
The latest approvals bring welcome news for India's financial capital, with three new services connecting to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Gorakhpur-Bandra Terminus Amrit Bharat Express will link eastern Uttar Pradesh with Mumbai, passing through key cities like Kanpur, Agra Fort, Kota, and Surat. Another service, the Subedarganj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, will connect the Prayagraj region in Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai, with stops including Jabalpur, Itarsi, and Nashik Road. A third weekly train, the Prayagraj-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, offers another direct link to Mumbai via a route that includes Satna, Jabalpur, Itarsi, and Kalyan.
Connecting North, South, and Central India
Beyond Mumbai, the new routes forge crucial links across the country. One of the longest new services is the Dhanbad-Coimbatore Amrit Bharat Express, connecting the mining hub of Jharkhand with the industrial city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. This train will traverse multiple states, with important stops at Gaya, Prayagraj Chheoki, Nagpur, Vijayawada, and Salem. Another significant addition is the Charlapalli-Gorakhpur Express, linking Telangana's capital region with Uttar Pradesh via Nagpur, Bhopal, and Lucknow. These routes are designed to cater to a mix of travellers, including migrant workers, pilgrims, and families, by connecting major population and economic centres.
New Links from Prayagraj and Gorakhpur
The cities of Gorakhpur and Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh have emerged as major hubs in this network expansion. In addition to the Mumbai-bound trains, Gorakhpur gets a new weekly service to Delhi. The Gorakhpur-Delhi Amrit Bharat Express will pass through Gonda, Bareilly, and Moradabad, providing a much-needed connection between eastern Uttar Pradesh and the national capital. Prayagraj also benefits from the new Prayagraj-Udhna Express, which will connect the city to Udhna near Surat in Gujarat. This route will pass through major Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh cities like Kota and Ratlam, opening up new travel corridors in western India.
What This Means for Passengers
The introduction of these seven trains is a strategic move by Indian Railways to modernise its fleet while keeping travel affordable for the masses. For millions of passengers who rely on non-AC coaches for long-distance journeys, the Amrit Bharat Express offers a superior experience without the premium price tag of Vande Bharat trains. The improved amenities, higher speeds, and enhanced safety measures represent a significant step up from conventional mail and express trains. The new routes are expected to be primarily weekly services, catering to high-demand corridors that connect industrial hubs, state capitals, and religious centres. Passengers should note that while the Railway Board has approved these routes, the official commencement dates and booking details will be announced by the respective railway zones in the coming weeks.
