For many nature lovers, planning a multi-stop wildlife trip means juggling complex logistics. Now, IRCTC is changing the game with all-inclusive wildlife tour packages from Mumbai, simplifying the journey from the city to the sanctuary.
A New Venture into the Wild
Indian Railway
Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), long known for pilgrimage circuits and holiday specials, has ventured into a thrilling new territory: wildlife tourism. In a significant move for travellers, IRCTC has partnered with the Maharashtra Forest Department to launch a series of curated wildlife packages. Named 'Vandarshan', these tours are designed to be an end-to-end solution for anyone dreaming of spotting a tiger in its natural habitat without the stress of planning. The initiative, which begins on November 19, rolls rail travel, accommodation, local transport, and, most crucially, confirmed safari permits into a single, seamless package. This addresses a major pain point for wildlife enthusiasts, as securing safari access in popular reserves during peak season can be a significant challenge.
Exploring Maharashtra's Tiger Country
The new offerings focus on the rich biodiversity of Maharashtra's tiger reserves, providing Mumbaikars with direct access to some of the country's premier wildlife destinations. IRCTC has rolled out five distinct itineraries that primarily feature the renowned Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve and Pench Tiger Reserve. However, the headline 'multi-stop' appeal comes from how these itineraries are structured. Depending on the chosen package, travellers can also visit adjoining sanctuaries like Bor Tiger Reserve, Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve, Umred-Paoni-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary, and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. For example, one package might pair a trip to Tadoba with a visit to Bor, while another combines Pench with Umred-Karhandla, creating a more diverse five-day wildlife experience.
The All-Inclusive Advantage
The core appeal of the Vandarshan packages lies in their all-in-one nature, which eliminates the logistical hurdles of a typical jungle holiday. Each fourndight, fivenday tour includes roundtrip train travel from Mumbai, typically on the Vidarbha Express. Upon arrival at the designated station, such as Wardha or Nagpur, travellers are met with arranged local transport to their hotel or resort near the park. The package covers accommodation, specified meals (like breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the resort), and the jungle safaris themselves via gypsy. By bundling confirmed train berths and safari permits, IRCTC solves two of the biggest uncertainties in trip planning. This integrated approach means travellers can focus on the experience rather than the coordination, making it ideal for families, photographers, and firsttime safarigoers.
Making Wildlife Tourism More Accessible
By adding these structured nature holidays to its lineup, IRCTC is effectively democratising wildlife travel. The packages provide a clear, organised, and reliable option for those who may have found the process of planning a safari trip intimidating or overly complex. The tours have a limited capacity, with IRCTC allocating a small number of berths in 2AC and 3AC coaches for each weekly departure, ensuring a more exclusive group experience. Prices start from approximately ₹29,500 per person for triple sharing, offering a predictable budget for a comprehensive trip. This strategic move not only diversifies IRCTC's portfolio beyond traditional tourism but also promotes Maharashtra's stunning forest destinations to a wider domestic audience, simplifying the path to an unforgettable adventure in the wild.
