What Exactly Is a Dirty Matcha?
A dirty matcha is a matcha latte that has been 'dirtied' with a shot of espresso. The base is a traditional matcha latte, made from finely ground green tea powder, water, and milk. A shot of espresso is then poured over the top, creating a visually appealing
swirl of dark brown through the vibrant green. The name follows the same logic as the 'dirty chai', where espresso is added to a chai latte. This combination creates not just a visual contrast but also a complex fusion of flavours, blending the earthy, grassy notes of matcha with the rich, roasted bitterness of coffee.
A Tale of Two Flavours
The taste of a dirty matcha is a journey of contrasts. On one side, you have the smooth, slightly sweet, and umami-rich character of matcha. On the other, the bold, aromatic, and pleasantly bitter punch of espresso. When combined, neither flavour completely overpowers the other. Instead, the coffee's intensity is softened by the creamy matcha, while the espresso lends a robust depth to the tea's lighter profile. Many describe the result as a balanced, complex beverage that is creamier and more nuanced than a standard latte. The addition of milk and an optional sweetener can further round out the flavours, making for a uniquely satisfying drink.
The Rise of a Social Media Star
The dirty matcha's popularity has been fuelled significantly by social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Its distinct layered appearance, sometimes called a 'camo latte', makes it incredibly photogenic. But its appeal goes beyond aesthetics. The drink represents a fusion of Eastern tea traditions and Western coffee culture, offering a novel experience for adventurous palates. Furthermore, it combines the purported health benefits of matcha, which is rich in antioxidants like EGCG and the amino acid L-theanine, with the familiar energy kick of coffee. This blend of unique flavour, visual appeal, and a dual-caffeine source has made it a must-try item in modern cafés.
Making It at Home
You don't need to be a professional barista to enjoy this drink. To make an iced dirty matcha at home, start by preparing the matcha. Whisk one to two teaspoons of matcha powder with a small amount of hot water until it forms a smooth, clump-free paste. Fill a tall glass with ice and your milk of choice, be it dairy or a plant-based alternative like oat milk. Pour the prepared matcha over the milk. Finally, brew a fresh shot of espresso (or about 60ml of strong coffee) and slowly pour it over the top to create the signature 'dirty' layers. You can add a sweetener like maple syrup or honey if you prefer. For a hot version, simply use steamed milk and combine all ingredients in a mug.
