widespread. When adjusted for population, India ranks 101st out of 116 countries. This suggests that AI adoption is not a grassroots phenomenon yet but is instead deeply concentrated within a specific professional class and geographic area. Over half of the country's AI usage on the platform originates from just four states: Maharashtra (15.5%), Tamil Nadu (13.2%), Karnataka (12.7%), and Delhi (10.5%). This is no coincidence; these states are home to India's biggest IT and services hubs, including Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and the Delhi NCR region.
Why The Services Hubs Are Leading the Charge
The concentration of AI adoption in cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai is a direct extension of their existing identity as the backbone of India's technology sector. For decades, these cities have cultivated a massive, highly skilled talent pool for the global IT industry. This pre-existing ecosystem of engineers, developers, and project managers provides the perfect foundation for AI adoption. The work being done here is also a key factor. The Anthropic report found that Indians are overwhelmingly using AI for professional tasks, particularly software development. India leads the world in the proportion of AI use dedicated to software-related tasks, at 45.2%. In these hubs, AI isn't a novelty; it's a powerful new tool being integrated into existing workflows to boost productivity and deliver complex projects for global clients.
The Productivity Boom
The embrace of AI in these professional settings is yielding remarkable results. The Anthropic report highlights that Indian users are achieving a 15x speedup on tasks using AI, taking just under 15 minutes to complete work that would otherwise take 3.8 hours. This outpaces the global average of a 12x speedup. Furthermore, Indian users seem more willing to delegate complex tasks to AI, with a higher average 'autonomy' score than the rest of the world. This suggests a high level of trust and a rapid integration of AI as a collaborative partner rather than just an assistant. Companies are leveraging this to ship products faster, improve code quality, and modernize their systems, with firms like Cognizant and CRED reporting significant efficiency gains.
Impact on Jobs: Augmentation Over Replacement
The rapid rise of AI naturally raises questions about the future of jobs in India's massive IT workforce. While some roles, particularly those involving routine coding and testing, are vulnerable to automation, the overall picture appears to be one of augmentation, not mass replacement. A Goldman Sachs report estimates that while 8-12% of jobs face a risk of substitution, a much larger 42-48% are likely to be complemented by AI, freeing up workers to focus on more creative and strategic tasks. Other reports from OpenAI have highlighted that beyond the core IT use case, states like Assam are showing strong engagement with AI for education, while regions like Jammu & Kashmir are using it more for health and wellness topics. For India to realize the full potential of AI, bridging this gap between the professional-user hubs and the rest of the country will be the next great challenge.
