What is the New Token System?
Indian Railways has introduced a token system at many Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters to manage the intense rush for Tatkal tickets. Instead of standing for hours in a physical queue, passengers are now issued a token with a sequence number.
This number determines your turn at the booking window. The goal is to make the process more organised, transparent, and less chaotic, reducing the long, uncertain waits that have long defined the counter Tatkal experience. This new system only applies to offline bookings at railway counters and does not affect the online booking process via the IRCTC website or app.
Why Your Arrival Time is Crucial
Under the old system, arriving the earliest and holding a spot was key. Now, arriving within a specific time window to collect a token is what matters. Indian Railways has designated specific times for token distribution, which are separate from the actual Tatkal booking windows. For AC classes, tokens are typically distributed from 8:30 AM to 9:00 AM. For non-AC classes, the window is from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM. The actual ticket booking still commences at 10:00 AM for AC classes and 11:00 AM for non-AC classes, respectively. Arriving before this token window starts offers no advantage, and arriving after it closes means you will miss the chance to get a token and will have to wait until all token holders have been served.
Your Photo ID is Non-Negotiable
Being prepared with proper identification is now more critical than ever. To get a token and book a ticket at the counter, you must present a valid, government-issued photo ID. Accepted documents include an Aadhaar Card, Passport, Voter ID, Driving Licence, or PAN Card. Some railway zones have even introduced priority categories. For instance, passengers booking for themselves or immediate family members may get priority (Category A) over others (Category B). To claim this priority, you might need to produce your own photo ID as well as proof of relationship to the family member. The issued tokens are strictly non-transferable, meaning the ticket will only be issued to the person whose name is on the token and who presented the ID.
The New Step-by-Step Process
Navigating the new system is straightforward if you are prepared. First, visit the railway reservation counter during the designated token distribution window for your class of travel. Present your photo ID and collect your numbered token. You no longer need to stand in a queue; you can wait for your token number to be announced or displayed. When your turn comes, proceed to the counter, present your token, fill out the reservation form with all passenger details, show your photo ID again if required, and complete the payment to receive your ticket. This eliminates the need for multiple visits to the counter or standing in different lines for a token and then for the ticket itself.
What Happens After Tokens Are Issued?
The token system is designed to serve a specific number of people in an orderly fashion. Initially, each counter is expected to issue a limited number of tokens, for example, 10 for AC classes and 15 for non-AC classes. This number can be adjusted by local authorities based on demand. If Tatkal seats are still available after all the token holders have completed their bookings, the remaining tickets will be sold on a traditional first-come, first-served basis to those waiting without tokens. Therefore, even if you miss the token window, there's still a chance, but the priority is clearly given to those who followed the new, organized process.
