A Pattern of Persistent Problems
Ford is currently leading all other automakers in the number of recall campaigns issued in the United States for the second year in a row. After setting an industry record with 153 distinct recalls affecting nearly 13 million vehicles in 2025, the company
has continued this trend into 2026. By the first quarter alone, the number of affected vehicles had already climbed into the millions, fueled by problems ranging from complex software errors to fundamental mechanical defects. The issues span across the company’s most popular models, including the best-selling F-150 pickup, the family-favourite Explorer SUV, and the electric Mustang Mach-E. Paradoxically, Ford also earned top marks among mass-market brands in J.D. Power's 2026 U.S. Initial Quality Study, suggesting that while new models may be showing improvement, legacy issues and problems with past repairs continue to surface.
The Major Recalls of 2026
Several large-scale recalls make up the bulk of this year's numbers. In late June, Ford recalled over 741,000 F-150s, Explorers, Expeditions, and their Lincoln counterparts due to a transmission defect that could cause vehicles to roll away while in park. This issue was linked to multiple allegations of property damage and injuries. Another significant campaign involved 1.74 million vehicles for faulty rearview camera displays. More recently, in early July, the company announced three separate recalls affecting over 177,000 vehicles, including Mustangs with faulty windshield wipers, Explorer and Nautilus Hybrids with software issues, and nearly 43,000 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs at risk of losing power due to a fracturing rear differential shaft. Compounding the problem, Ford has also had to issue re-recalls for vehicles that were supposedly already fixed, including nearly 147,000 F-150s where a previous software update was not properly installed.
Is My Vehicle on the List?
The recalls have touched a wide and varied portion of Ford's lineup. If you own a recent Ford or Lincoln vehicle, it is crucial to check if you are affected. The most prominent models appearing in 2026 recall notices include: - Ford F-150 (2018-2021, 2024 model years) - Ford Explorer (2020-2021, 2025-2026 model years) - Ford Expedition (2018-2021 model years) - Ford Mustang (2024-2026 model years) - Ford Mustang Mach-E (2021-2023 model years) - Lincoln Navigator (2018-2021 model years) - Lincoln Aviator (2020-2021 model years) This is not an exhaustive list, as other models like the Bronco, Maverick, and Ranger have also been subject to recalls for various engine and lighting issues. The problems range from trim pieces that can detach on the highway to serious powertrain faults that can lead to a loss of power or engine failure.
How to Check Your Ford for Recalls
Waiting for a letter in the mail is not the fastest way to confirm if your vehicle is safe. The most effective step any owner can take is to check for open recalls themselves. All you need is your vehicle's 17-character Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). You can typically find the VIN on the driver's side of the dashboard, visible through the windshield, or on the sticker inside the driver’s side door jamb. Once you have your VIN, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website at NHTSA.gov/recalls and enter it into the search tool. You can also use the official recall lookup tool on Ford's own website. These portals will provide a definitive list of any open, unrepaired recalls specific to your car. If a recall is listed, the next step is to contact your local Ford or Lincoln dealership to schedule a repair. All safety recall repairs are performed free of charge by law.
