The 30-Day Visa-Free Rule Explained
In a significant move to boost tourism and strengthen ties, Uzbekistan has introduced a visa-free regime for Indian citizens, which came into effect on September 1, 2026. This policy allows Indian passport holders to enter and stay in Uzbekistan for up
to 30 days without a visa. Previously, travellers had to navigate an e-visa system. The change was announced following high-level talks between Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in late August 2026. However, this isn't an open-door policy for all. The visa-free entry comes with a crucial condition that travellers must be aware of.
The Key Condition You Must Meet
The 30-day visa-free entry is not universally applicable. To qualify, Indian citizens must hold a valid multiple-entry visa for one of a specific list of developed countries. These countries include the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the Republic of Korea, or any of the Schengen states. This means if you have a valid tourist or business visa for the US, UK, or Schengen area, for example, you can enter Uzbekistan visa-free. Additionally, you must have an air ticket to return to India or for onward travel to a third country as proof of your travel plans. This policy is aimed at seasoned travellers who already possess visas for these specific nations.

This new rule significantly streamlines travel for a large segment of Indian tourists and business people. The previous e-visa process, while online, still required an application and a fee of around $20. The visa-free regime removes this step entirely, making spontaneous trips or multi-country itineraries that include Uzbekistan much easier. With 14 direct flights already operating between India and Uzbekistan every week, the logistical barriers to visiting are lower than ever. The Uzbek government hopes this move will help increase tourist arrivals from India, which have already been growing steadily in recent years. It is part of a broader tourism cooperation program between the two nations for 2026-2028.
More Than Just Easier Entry
The travel experience within Uzbekistan is also set to become smoother for Indians. An agreement was recently signed to enable the use of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system in the country. This development means Indian tourists will be able to make payments easily at shops, restaurants, and hotels using the familiar UPI platform, reducing the need to carry large amounts of foreign currency or rely solely on international credit cards. This financial integration, combined with the visa-free policy, signals a clear intent to make Uzbekistan a more welcoming and accessible destination for Indian visitors.
