The ocean acts like a giant sponge for heat. Scientific estimates show that the world's oceans have absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gas emissions over the past half-century. Water has a much higher heat capacity than air, meaning it can absorb huge amounts of energy with only a small increase in temperature. As they ascend, their sensors record temperature, pressure, and salinity with remarkable accuracy. This data is then transmitted via satellite, giving researchers a near real-time, three-dimensional picture of how heat is distributed throughout the upper ocean, far beyond what surface measurements alone could ever reveal.
The Alarming Consequences of a Warmer Ocean
A warmer ocean unleashes a cascade of dangerous effects. One of the most immediate is the intensification of weather. Warmer water provides more fuel for storms, leading to more powerful and destructive hurricanes and cyclones. It also contributes directly to sea-level rise through a process called thermal expansion—as water heats up, it expands. Marine ecosystems are suffering immensely. Record temperatures are triggering mass coral bleaching events, disrupting fisheries that billions of people depend on for food and livelihoods, and forcing marine life to flee toward the poles in search of cooler waters. Harmful algal blooms, which can produce toxins dangerous to both marine life and humans, also become more frequent and intense.
A Locked-In Warming and Uncertain Future
The heat already absorbed by the ocean is essentially locked in for centuries to millennia, meaning that its effects will continue to unfold long after greenhouse gas emissions are reduced. Furthermore, a warmer ocean is less efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, potentially creating a feedback loop that accelerates climate change.
