An Ambitious Target
Phu Quoc has officially set a goal to welcome 8.5 million tourists this year, a target that reflects the island's booming growth and increasing global profile. This includes an aim for two million international visitors, an 11% increase from the previous
year. The confidence comes from a strong start to 2026, with many hotels and resorts fully booked over the New Year holiday. The early months of the year saw a significant surge, with total visitor arrivals in the first seven months reaching over 6.8 million, a 30% increase year-on-year. This performance puts the island well on its way to achieving nearly 70% of its annual goal in just over half the year, demonstrating a powerful momentum that outpaces many regional competitors.
The Engine of Growth
Several key factors are driving this tourism explosion. A cornerstone of its appeal is a unique visa-exemption policy, which allows international tourists of all nationalities to visit the island for up to 30 days without a visa, provided they enter and exit directly from Phu Quoc. This has dramatically simplified access and boosted its competitiveness. Another major driver is massive investment in infrastructure. Phu Quoc International Airport is undergoing significant expansion and has recorded the highest number of international arrivals in its history, with flight numbers and passenger throughput continuing to climb sharply in 2026. This is coupled with a wave of development from major corporations like Sun Group and Vingroup, who are pouring billions into high-end resorts, entertainment complexes, and critical infrastructure ahead of the APEC 2027 summit, which the island will host.
More Than Just Sun and Sand
While its pristine beaches like Bai Kem and Bai Sao are world-renowned, Phu Quoc's appeal extends far beyond its coastline. The island offers a diverse mix of attractions that cater to different types of travelers. A large portion of the island is a protected UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, offering lush, primordial forests for eco-tourism and adventure. For thrill-seekers and families, there are modern theme parks, a record-breaking cable car system, and vibrant entertainment shows. This is balanced with rich local culture, from the island’s famous fish sauce and pepper farms to bustling night markets. This blend of natural beauty, modern luxury, and authentic local experiences is helping Phu Quoc shed its image as a purely domestic destination and emerge as an international entertainment and resort hub.
The Challenges of Rapid Success
However, this rapid ascent is not without its challenges. The surge in visitors raises questions about sustainability and the capacity of local infrastructure to keep pace. There is a pressing need to manage development to preserve the natural beauty that makes the island so attractive in the first place. Environmental protection, waste management, and ensuring a stable power and water supply are critical issues that authorities and developers must address as the island grows. Furthermore, as one tourism expert noted, the boom demands higher service standards and richer tourism experiences to ensure visitors not only come but also return. Striking the right balance between aggressive economic growth and sustainable, responsible tourism will be the key to Phu Quoc’s long-term success.
