When the mercury climbed, so did the demand for chilled treats. According to the latest summer trends report from Swiggy, which analyzed orders from mid-April to mid-June, the demand for desserts grew by a significant 19.2% compared to the previous year.
Similarly, orders for cold beverages shot up by 20.7%, confirming that a frosty drink was the preferred way to combat the sweltering afternoons. This trend wasn't just confined to the metros; emerging cities like Amaravati and Thanjavur saw dessert orders grow by an impressive 63% and 44.1% respectively, showcasing a nationwide pattern of seeking comfort through cold and sweet foods.
The Reign of Mango and Coconut
This summer, the 'king of fruits' was also the king of orders. Mango-mania was in full swing, with demand for mango-flavoured desserts and ice creams increasing by 19.3%. Mango lassi was a particular favourite, with Swiggy delivering an average of 1,547 glasses every single day. The love for mango even led to some extraordinary orders, including one user in Bhopal who ordered 120 pieces of mango cake at once. While mango dominated, coconut was another sought-after flavour for its cooling properties. Tender coconut ice cream saw its demand grow by 13.4%, becoming a national favourite. This was especially true in cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, as well as emerging markets such as Surat and Raipur.
Coffee Beats the Heat
While traditional fruit juices like watermelon, orange, and lime remained popular, the real surprise of the season was the surge in coffee-based drinks. The demand for cold coffee and mocha-based beverages increased by a staggering 38.4% year-over-year. This indicates a shift in how Indians are getting their caffeine fix during the hotter months, opting for an iced version to cool down. Orders for these caffeinated coolers peaked between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., suggesting they served as both an afternoon pick-me-up and a post-dinner treat. Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru led the demand for this trend.

The preference for cold, sweet, and convenient options highlights a behavioural shift amplified by modern technology. Delivery apps make it effortless to satisfy a craving without stepping into the scorching sun. The popularity of traditional coolers like lassi and buttermilk alongside modern favourites like iced coffee and cheesecakes shows a blend of old and new habits. Furthermore, the 9 p.m. peak for ice cream orders across all cities suggests a national ritual of ending the day with a comforting, cool dessert. It's a small indulgence that makes the harsh summer just a little more bearable.
