Explosive Growth by the Numbers
Phu Quoc's tourism sector is experiencing a remarkable boom in 2026. In the first seven months of the year alone, the island welcomed more than 6.8 million visitors, a jump of over 30% compared to the same period last year. The growth in international
travellers is even more pronounced, with arrivals skyrocketing by more than 53%. This influx has pushed total tourism revenue to an estimated VND 36.4 trillion. To put this in perspective, these figures, achieved just past the halfway mark of the year, already represent nearly 70% of the island's full-year target, showcasing a pace that outstrips many established resort destinations. Earlier in the year, figures for the first five months showed a 34% rise in visitors and revenues of nearly VND 27 trillion, setting the stage for this continued upward trend.
The Visa-Free Advantage
A key driver of this international appeal is Phu Quoc's unique visa policy. It stands as the only destination in Vietnam offering a 30-day visa-free stay to tourists of all nationalities. This policy removes a significant barrier to entry, saving travellers time and money on application processes. To be eligible, visitors must fly directly to Phu Quoc International Airport or arrive by sea, and they must remain on the island for their stay. While tourists can transit through other major Vietnamese airports like Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, they must stay within the designated transit area before their connecting flight to the island. This open-door policy has made Phu Quoc an incredibly attractive and accessible option for short getaways, especially for travellers from nearby Asian hubs.
Unprecedented Infrastructure Investment
The surge in visitors is supported by what one industry expert described as an “unprecedented” wave of infrastructure investment, the likes of which are rarely seen elsewhere. Phu Quoc is being transformed into a major hub in preparation for hosting the APEC 2027 summit. This includes a massive expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport, which is being upgraded to handle up to 24 million passengers annually. Beyond the airport, billions are being invested in new hotel complexes, luxury resorts, and large-scale entertainment facilities. Major players like Sun Group are developing entire hospitality 'cities' and attractions such as 'Sunset Town', which features nightly fireworks and multimedia shows designed to lengthen stays and increase tourist spending.
More Than Just Beaches
While pristine beaches like Kem Beach remain a primary draw, Phu Quoc's appeal is broadening. The island is cultivating a diverse ecosystem of attractions. This includes world-class entertainment shows like 'Kiss of the Sea', which has seen its attendance climb dramatically, and vibrant nightlife hubs that keep visitors engaged after the sun goes down. The development strategy also focuses on creating high-quality ecotourism experiences and preserving the island's natural beauty, which covers a significant portion of its area. By combining its natural assets with top-tier entertainment and cultural offerings, Phu Quoc is successfully positioning itself as a direct competitor to established regional giants like Phuket and Bali.
Navigating the Path Forward
This rapid development is not without challenges. The surge in tourism places significant pressure on local resources and the environment. Officials and industry leaders acknowledge the need to balance economic growth with sustainability to ensure the island's long-term viability. The focus is on enhancing the quality of experiences and encouraging longer stays, rather than simply increasing visitor numbers. As Phu Quoc prepares for the global spotlight of APEC 2027, the goal is to create a robust and sustainable tourism model that will secure its future as a premier international destination for years to come, long after the summit concludes.
