What Exactly Is E20 Fuel?
E20 is simply petrol blended with 20% ethanol. Ethanol is a biofuel, typically produced from agricultural sources like sugarcane and maize in India. This blend is part of a major national policy to reduce reliance on imported crude oil, lower carbon emissions,
and boost the agricultural economy. The government has rapidly rolled out E20, advancing its target from 2030 to 2025 and largely achieving it ahead of schedule. For most drivers, this means E20 is now the standard option at the pump.
The Science Behind the Mileage Drop
The central trade-off for consumers comes down to basic chemistry. Ethanol has a lower energy density than petrol, meaning a litre of ethanol contains less energy than a litre of pure petrol. When you blend 20% ethanol into the fuel, the overall energy content of that litre of E20 is slightly reduced. Consequently, your car's engine needs to burn a little more E20 fuel to travel the same distance it would on petrol with a lower ethanol content, resulting in lower mileage.
How Much Mileage Will You Lose?
This is the crucial question for every vehicle owner. Government ministries and official testing bodies have confirmed the drop, though figures vary slightly. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, along with studies from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), generally place the reduction in fuel efficiency between 3% and 6%. For older vehicles not originally designed for E20, the drop can be in the range of 2-6%. In practical terms, if your car typically delivered 15 kilometres per litre (km/l), you might now get between 14.1 and 14.5 km/l. While some anecdotal reports on social media claim much higher losses, official tests and manufacturer statements point to this more modest range.
Are There Other Trade-Offs?
While the mileage penalty is the most discussed issue, it's not the only consideration. For vehicles manufactured after 2023, automakers have ensured they are E20-compliant, meaning their engines and fuel systems are designed to handle the blend without issues. However, for older cars, there have been some concerns about ethanol's potential to corrode certain rubber and plastic components in the fuel system over the long term. The government and manufacturers maintain that E20 does not cause engine damage, but the mileage drop remains the most direct and universally confirmed impact for consumers.
Why the Push for E20, Then?
The government views the small mileage loss as a necessary trade-off for significant national gains. The E20 programme aims to reduce India's massive oil import bill, saving valuable foreign exchange. It also promises a cleaner burn, leading to lower tailpipe emissions and improved air quality. Furthermore, it creates a stable, large-scale market for agricultural products, directly benefiting farmers. Some officials also point to performance benefits like a higher octane rating, which can lead to smoother engine operation. The policy prioritises long-term energy security and environmental goals over the marginal decrease in individual vehicle efficiency.
