Unlocking National Potential
In early September 2026, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) gave the green light to three major railway multitracking projects. These initiatives, part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, will add approximately 656 kilometres of new
lines and are designed to significantly increase the capacity of some of India’s most critical rail corridors. The primary goal is to alleviate heavy congestion caused by passenger and freight trains sharing the same tracks. By adding third and fourth lines to busy routes, the expansion aims to streamline the movement of goods, particularly bulk commodities like coal, cement, and steel, while also improving the speed and reliability of passenger services. This massive undertaking is expected to be completed by 2029-30 and will directly impact 14 districts, connecting nearly 4,800 villages and a population of around 56 lakh.
West Bengal & Jharkhand: Energising the East
West Bengal and Jharkhand are central to the Kharagpur-Jharsuguda fourth line project, a critical artery for the nation's industrial and mineral transport. This expansion will enhance connectivity for the movement of coal from the rich mines in Jharkhand and neighbouring states to ports and power plants. For West Bengal, improved rail infrastructure strengthens its position as a logistical gateway to the northeast and neighbouring countries. The project is set to reduce transit times, lower logistics costs, and boost industrial activity in the region, creating employment and supporting ancillary businesses that rely on efficient transportation. By separating freight and passenger traffic, the expansion will also lead to more reliable and faster passenger train services for residents.
Odisha: The Mineral and Coastal Powerhouse
Odisha stands to be a significant beneficiary of the Kharagpur-Jharsuguda line expansion. The state is a major hub for minerals and heavy industries, including steel and aluminium. The new railway capacity will facilitate much faster evacuation of these goods to ports like Paradip and Dhamra, as well as to industrial centres across the country. This enhancement is crucial for making the state's exports more competitive globally. Beyond industrial gains, the project will also boost tourism by improving access to key destinations like the Jagannath Temple and other cultural sites near the rail corridors. The decongestion of tracks means more efficient movement of both raw materials and finished products, underpinning further industrial investment in the state.
Madhya Pradesh: Central India's New Artery
Madhya Pradesh will benefit from two key projects: the Katni-Pendra Road fourth line and the Bilaspur (Uslapur)-Pendra Road third line. These routes are vital for connecting central India to both the eastern and western parts of the country. For Madhya Pradesh, a state rich in agricultural produce and minerals, this expansion means quicker and more reliable access to national markets. The added capacity will support the transport of coal and cement, which are crucial for the state's economy. Furthermore, improved connectivity is expected to promote tourism to destinations like the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve and the temples of Amarkantak, making them more accessible to travellers from across India.
Chhattisgarh: Fuelling the Nation's Core
As a state at the heart of India's coal and steel production, Chhattisgarh's economy is intrinsically linked to rail transport. The new third and fourth lines running through the state, including the Bilaspur-Pendra and Katni-Pendra sections, will provide a massive boost to its industrial sector. The expansion will create an estimated additional freight capacity of 27 million tonnes per annum, a significant portion of which will serve Chhattisgarh's industries. This will allow for the faster movement of raw materials to steel plants and coal to power stations nationwide. The decongested network will not only reduce logistics costs for businesses but also improve passenger travel and provide better connectivity for remote villages within the state.
