Recent data from AI company Anthropic has positioned India as a quiet heavyweight in the global AI landscape. According to the firm's latest Economic Index, India now accounts for 5.8% of all global usage for its flagship AI, Claude, making it the second-largest
market after only the United States. This places India ahead of many other nations in terms of sheer volume of interaction with the powerful generative AI tool. However, the story is more nuanced than it first appears. While India's total usage is high, this is largely driven by the nation's vast population. On a per capita basis, India ranks 101st out of 116 countries, suggesting that AI adoption is deep but not yet wide. The usage is concentrated within a specific, highly-skilled segment of the population rather than being a widespread consumer phenomenon.
The Four Tech Powerhouses
The most striking finding is the geographical concentration of Claude's user base. More than half of all usage in India comes from just four key regions: Maharashtra (15.5%), Tamil Nadu (13.2%), Karnataka (12.7%), and the National Capital Territory of Delhi (10.5%). This is no coincidence. This pattern almost perfectly mirrors the geography of India's established IT and services industry. These states are home to the nation's primary technology and economic hubs—Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra, Chennai in Tamil Nadu, Bengaluru in Karnataka, and the sprawling Delhi-NCR metroplex. Rather than charting a new map, the generative AI wave appears to be amplifying the strength of these existing ecosystems, where a critical mass of developers, startups, and large tech enterprises already exists.
A Nation of Professional Users
So, what are Indians using Claude for? Unlike global patterns that show significant casual or personal use, India's engagement with the AI is overwhelmingly professional. The data reveals a strong work orientation, with a staggering 45.2% of all tasks in India being software-related—the highest share of any country in the world. Developers and programmers across the country are using the tool to write and debug code, build applications, and accelerate their workflows. The second major use case is education, with students and researchers leveraging the AI for coursework, learning complex topics, and handling academic tasks. This focus on professional and educational applications suggests users are treating Claude not as a novelty, but as a serious productivity tool.
Productivity on a New Scale
Indian users are not just using AI for simple tasks; they are delegating complex and time-consuming work to it. The Anthropic report highlights a remarkable productivity gain: tasks that would take an Indian user an average of 3.8 hours to complete manually are being finished in just 14.8 minutes with Claude's assistance. This represents a 15-fold speedup, which is significantly higher than the global average of a 12-fold improvement. This suggests that professionals in India's tech hubs are at the frontier of AI adoption, pushing the technology's capabilities to solve more challenging problems and integrating it deeply into their professional lives. The trend points to a workforce that is rapidly adapting to and leveraging AI to gain a competitive edge in the global market.
