Your Gateway to Maharashtra's Wild Heart
Launched in partnership with the Maharashtra Forest Department on International Tiger Day 2026, the 'Vandarshan' initiative is designed to simplify wildlife tourism. The core appeal of these packages is their all-in-one nature. Instead of juggling separate
bookings for trains, hotels, and highly sought-after safari permits, travellers can secure everything in a single transaction. This approach removes significant logistical hurdles, particularly the challenge of securing safari permits in popular reserves, which often sell out moments after becoming available. IRCTC promotes these tours as a way to experience the thrill of the jungle with the convenience of rail travel, making the state's wilderness more accessible to everyone.
The Six Featured Wildlife Destinations
The Vandarshan packages provide access to six key protected areas in Maharashtra, primarily in the Vidarbha region. These include four official Tiger Reserves and two Wildlife Sanctuaries. The destinations covered are Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. In addition to these, the packages also feature tours to Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary and Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. It is important to note that while Maharashtra has six tiger reserves in total, these packages focus on the four most accessible via the current rail routes, with Melghat and Sahyadri tiger reserves not being part of the Vandarshan initiative at present.
A Look at the Itinerary and Travel
The initial launch features five curated itineraries, each structured as a four-night, five-day journey. These tours are designed to cater to a variety of travellers, including families, photographers, and dedicated wildlife enthusiasts. The primary mode of transport to the region is the Vidarbha Express, departing from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). The train journey takes travellers to key railheads like Nagpur, Wardha, and Gondia. From these stations, dedicated road transport is arranged to the respective wildlife reserves. For instance, accessing Tadoba involves a road journey from a nearby station, as the train does not stop directly at Chandrapur.
What Your Package Price Includes
The main advantage of the Vandarshan package is its comprehensive list of inclusions, designed to provide a hassle-free experience. A single booking covers several key components of the trip. The package includes confirmed train tickets for the journey to and from the destination region. Crucially, it also includes confirmed wildlife safari permits, which are often the most difficult part of planning such a trip. Accommodation in hotels or lodges near the parks is part of the deal, along with local road transportation for transfers between the railway station, hotel, and safari gates. Guided wildlife experiences are also included, ensuring you have knowledgeable guides during your jungle safaris.
Understanding Potential Exclusions
While the packages are largely all-inclusive, travellers should be aware of a few potential extra costs. The specifics can vary between itineraries, but typically, meals not explicitly mentioned in the itinerary (often lunches) might be excluded. Any personal expenses, such as laundry, shopping, or tips, are not covered. Camera fees, which are sometimes levied separately at park entrances for professional equipment, may also be an additional cost. It is always recommended to read the detailed itinerary and terms for the specific package you are booking on the IRCTC portal to get a precise list of what is and isn't included in the final price.
How to Book Your Wildlife Adventure
Booking a Vandarshan package is straightforward and is done through official IRCTC channels. The primary platform for booking is the IRCTC Tourism website, which features a dedicated section for these wildlife packages. Travellers can browse the different itineraries, check for departure dates, and view the detailed inclusions and costs. The booking process is consolidated, allowing you to pay for the entire package—from train travel to safari—in one go. Given the popularity of wildlife tourism, especially for tiger reserves like Tadoba and Pench, it is advisable to book well in advance, particularly as the core safari zones reopen after the monsoon season, typically around October 1st.
