A Tale of Two Trajectories
The World Bank’s 2026 World Development Report offers a nuanced look at the future of work, and the headline finding is clear: your job’s risk from AI depends heavily on where you live. According to the report, workers in high-income countries are more
than three times as likely to have their jobs exposed to AI automation than those in low- and middle-income nations. The figures are stark: 14.2% of jobs in wealthy nations are at risk, compared to just 4.5% in developing economies. This is not because AI is less capable, but because the job markets are fundamentally different. Advanced economies are dominated by the exact kind of knowledge-based, white-collar sectors like finance and marketing that generative AI is poised to disrupt. In contrast, many developing economies remain more reliant on agriculture and manual work, which are less immediately threatened by cognitive automation.
The Productivity Paradox
While job displacement risk is lower in developing nations, the potential for AI-driven productivity gains is surprisingly similar across the board. The report finds that 16.2% of jobs in developing economies could see a significant productivity boost from AI, not far behind the 18.7% projected for high-income countries. This presents what World Bank Chief Economist Indermit Gill calls a "lifeline" for developing economies. The greatest promise, the report argues, lies not in replacing workers but in amplifying their capabilities. For instance, AI tools can help doctors in underserved areas diagnose illnesses, guide farmers with better planting decisions, or support teachers in creating adaptive lesson plans, effectively putting scarce expertise within reach of millions.
India's Double-Edged Sword
For India, the report's findings present a complex picture. On one hand, its large agrarian and informal sectors mean overall job exposure to AI is lower than in the West. However, the very sectors that built India's modern middle class—IT services, business process management, and a burgeoning network of Global Capability Centres (GCCs)—are highly integrated into the global economy and thus more exposed to automation trends driven by their multinational clients. The report cautions that AI could erode the outsourcing advantages that have fuelled growth for decades, with early signs showing that multinational firms are already adjusting their hiring strategies more quickly than domestic ones. Some entry-level roles in software, finance, and business services could be closed off, threatening a key pathway to middle-class employment for young workers.
Adapt, Don't Just Adopt
The World Bank report strongly advises against developing countries trying to compete with the US and China in building costly, large-scale AI models. Instead, it proposes a three-step path: adopt available tools, adapt them to local conditions, and only then advance towards frontier AI development. For India, this means focusing on creating smaller, sector-specific AI tools for agriculture, healthcare, and education. Adapting models to local languages, cultures, and institutional needs is critical. The report cites India's own initiatives, like the BHASHINI project to make public data available in local languages, as a model for how to successfully adapt AI for national benefit.
The Urgency of Action
The central message from the World Bank is one of opportunity tempered with urgency. While AI offers developing countries the chance to leapfrog decades of development in just a few years, the window to get it right is narrow. Without deliberate action, AI risks widening the gap between countries, increasing inequality, and concentrating market power in the hands of a few tech giants. Governments are urged to act swiftly to close gaps in digital connectivity, skills, and institutional quality. For workers and businesses, the takeaway is that the AI revolution is not about job loss as much as it is about a fundamental reorganization of work and a shift in the skills that are valued. The future belongs to those who can learn to work alongside AI, augmenting their own abilities with its power.
