The Degree Is No Longer Enough
The traditional path was simple: get a good degree, and a good job will follow. Today, that promise is fading. India's job market is flooded with graduates, but industries are grappling with a significant skills gap. According to the India Skills Report
2026, overall employability has risen to 56.35%, which still means a large portion of graduates are not considered job-ready. This isn't because they lack knowledge, but because their academic learning hasn't translated into the practical abilities needed in the modern workplace. A recent report highlighted that a staggering 89% of Indian employers now prioritise practical skills over college degrees when hiring for entry-level roles. The message is clear: a degree gets you to the interview, but skills get you the job.
Why the Shift to a Skill-First Economy?
Several factors are driving this change. The rapid pace of technological advancement, especially the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation, is transforming industries. Over 90% of Indian employees are already using Generative AI tools, making digital fluency a baseline competency rather than a specialised skill. Companies need a workforce that can adapt and contribute from day one, without months of on-the-job training. This has led to what is being called a 'hybrid evaluation model', where a degree acts as a filter for basic discipline, but demonstrable skills are the deciding factor. Employers are now more interested in what you can build, what problems you can solve, and your experience with industry-standard tools.
What Employers Are Actually Looking For
Employers are increasingly specific about the skills they need. Technical, or 'hard', skills in high demand include AI and machine learning, data analytics, cybersecurity, and cloud computing. However, soft skills are just as crucial. Communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability are consistently ranked as top requirements by hiring managers. In an increasingly automated world, these uniquely human skills are becoming a key differentiator. Companies are looking for professionals who can not only perform technical tasks but also collaborate effectively, navigate complex situations, and demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning.
How to Gain Relevant Work Experience
For students and recent graduates, bridging the experience gap is paramount. Internships are one of the most effective ways to do this, providing hands-on experience and valuable industry exposure. In fact, students with at least one internship are three times more likely to receive a job offer after graduation. Beyond formal internships, other avenues can build a strong profile. Freelancing allows you to take on real projects and build a portfolio while still in college. Participating in volunteering, college workshops, and online competitions can also showcase initiative and develop crucial soft skills. The goal is to create proof of work. A GitHub profile for a coder or a portfolio of marketing campaigns can often speak louder than a transcript.
