The festive season is upon us, and with it, the annual rush to travel home. As millions prepare to journey for Dussehra and Diwali, Central Railway is increasing vigilance to ensure safety and curb ticketless travel. Here’s your guide.
An All-Out Checking Drive
To manage the anticipated
surge in passengers, Central Railway has initiated an intensive ticket-checking drive across its network, scheduled from October 1 to October 31, 2026. This month-long operation targets not only ticketless travel but also the misuse of concessions, passes, and reserved quotas. Special squads will be deployed across major stations and on long-distance trains to ensure compliance. The primary goal is to prevent revenue loss and fraudulent travel, making the journey smoother for genuine passengers during the hectic festive period.
Your ID is Non-Negotiable
This year, the focus is squarely on identity verification. Passengers traveling on tickets booked under any concession (like for students or patients) or special quota must carry the prescribed original identity proof. Photocopies or images on a phone may not be accepted. Acceptable forms of ID include Aadhaar, PAN card, Voter ID, driving license, or a government-issued photo ID card. For group bookings, it is crucial that at least one passenger named on the ticket presents their original ID. Failure to do so could result in the entire group being treated as traveling without a valid ticket under railway rules.
Heftier Penalties for Violations
Travellers should be aware that the penalties for violations have become stricter. Following the Jan Vishwas Act, the minimum penalty for ticketless travel was increased from ₹250 to ₹500, effective earlier this year. This fine is in addition to the actual fare for the journey. The intensified drive aims to enforce these higher penalties to deter potential offenders. Railway staff, including those using E-Passes or Privilege Ticket Orders (PTO), are also under scrutiny and must carry their original IDs and ensure their passes are properly validated before travel to avoid fines.
Watch Your Luggage and Safety
Beyond tickets, the checks extend to luggage and safety protocols. Passengers are reminded to adhere to the official luggage limits to avoid penalties. More importantly, Indian Railways has issued a strict advisory against carrying flammable or explosive items like firecrackers, kerosene, and gas cylinders. With trains running at full capacity, these measures are critical for preventing accidents. RPF personnel will be conducting random baggage checks at stations to ensure these rules are followed, safeguarding all passengers.
Special Trains to Ease the Rush
It’s not just about enforcement; Central Railway is also working to accommodate the extra demand. Hundreds of special train services have been announced to clear the festive rush for Puja, Diwali, and Chhath festivals. Central Railway alone will operate 418 special services, connecting major hubs like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur to destinations across the country. These trains, often designated with a '0' prefix, provide much-needed extra capacity. Passengers are advised to regularly check the IRCTC website and the NTES app for announcements and booking details for these special services.
Tips for a Hassle-Free Journey
To navigate the festive rush smoothly, planning is key. Always travel with a valid, confirmed ticket and the original ID used for booking. Arrive at the station well in advance to account for increased security and crowding. Book your luggage officially if it exceeds the free allowance for your travel class. Finally, cooperate with railway staff during checks; they are in place to ensure a safe and orderly journey for everyone. By following the rules, you can focus on what matters most: reaching your destination to celebrate with your loved ones.
