What are Vandarshan Tours?
Vandarshan is a new wildlife tourism initiative launched by IRCTC Tourism in partnership with the Maharashtra Forest Department. Announced on International Tiger Day on July 29, 2026, the collaboration is designed to simplify travel to Maharashtra's famous
wildlife sanctuaries and promote sustainable tourism. Described as a “gateway to Maharashtra’s wild heart,” the scheme combines IRCTC’s expertise in travel logistics with the forest department’s access to protected reserves, creating a seamless experience for tourists. The core idea is to eliminate the stress of coordinating multiple bookings, a common challenge for those wanting to explore the state's natural heritage.
The All-in-One Package Explained
The main appeal of the Vandarshan tours is the convenience of a single booking. Each package includes confirmed train tickets, hotel or resort accommodation, all local road transport, and, most crucially, guaranteed wildlife safari permits. Securing safari permits, especially for popular core zones in tiger reserves, is often the biggest hurdle for travellers, as they sell out months in advance. Vandarshan packages solve this by leveraging a bulk institutional allocation of permits from the forest department, ensuring that travellers have confirmed entry into the parks. The tours are structured as four-night, five-day itineraries, making for a well-paced wildlife holiday.
Destinations on the Itinerary
Initially, the Vandarshan tours will focus on six key wildlife destinations within Maharashtra. This includes four of the state's six major tiger reserves: Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve, Pench National Park, Bor Tiger Reserve, and Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve. The other two locations covered are the Umred Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary and the Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. These parks are renowned for their biodiversity and offer high chances of spotting tigers and other wildlife. The tours are designed to depart from Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on the Vidarbha Express, which provides access to the Vidarbha region where these sanctuaries are located.
The Real Value: Convenience and Certainty
For any seasoned safari-goer in India, the true value of Vandarshan lies in its promise of certainty. Planning a trip to a tiger reserve like Tadoba independently requires juggling a train ticket that may not get confirmed, a safari permit portal that opens 120 days in advance and often crashes, and a hotel booking that requires payment before the other two are settled. Vandarshan collapses these three high-stress transactions into one. The guaranteed safari permit alone is a significant benefit, as a single core-zone jeep safari can cost anywhere from ₹5,800 to ₹12,800 and is notoriously difficult to secure. This makes the package particularly attractive for families, first-time safari travellers, and anyone who prefers an organised and predictable travel plan.
How to Book and What to Expect
The Vandarshan tours are available for booking exclusively through the IRCTC Tourism portal. While detailed pricing for each package has not been widely published, the tours are offered as five curated itineraries catering to different interests, such as families, photographers, and general wildlife enthusiasts. Travellers can expect an all-inclusive experience that typically covers the train journey, accommodation with meals, local transfers from the railway station to the resort, and the guided jeep safaris. By simplifying the booking process, IRCTC and the Maharashtra Forest Department hope to boost tourism, promote conservation awareness, and support local livelihoods surrounding these protected areas.
