Dubai International Airport is in the process of rolling out a new generation of advanced security scanners across its terminals. The biggest change for passengers is the elimination of the need to remove large electronic devices and liquids from hand
luggage during the security screening process. According to Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths, the investment in new technology is designed to make the entire security process “slicker, quicker, faster, and more convenient” for the millions who pass through the hub. This upgrade means the familiar routine of fumbling for your laptop and placing toiletries in a separate tray is being phased out, promising to reduce one of the most common points of stress and delay in air travel.
How the New Technology Works
The new machines being installed are Computed Tomography (CT) scanners, similar to those used in the medical field. These scanners provide security staff with detailed, high-resolution 3D images of the contents of your bag. Unlike traditional 2D X-ray machines, this advanced imaging allows for a more thorough analysis without needing items to be separated. The system uses sophisticated algorithms, sometimes powered by artificial intelligence, to detect potential threats with greater accuracy. This not only improves security but also significantly reduces the number of false alarms that lead to time-consuming manual bag checks. The upgrade is being handled by global security tech firm Smiths Detection, using their HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX scanners.
When and Where Will This Happen?
The rollout of the new scanners is a gradual, ongoing programme. Dubai Airports has confirmed that some of the new machines are already installed and operational as they work to replace older equipment across all terminals. While previous reports mentioned trials and a completion goal by the end of 2026, recent updates from late August 2026 confirm the programme has moved firmly into the deployment phase across Terminals 1, 2, and 3. However, because the change is progressive, travellers should not yet assume every security lane is equipped with the new technology. Passengers are advised to always follow the specific instructions given by security staff at the checkpoint. The ultimate goal is to replace all older machines to ensure every customer has the same convenient experience.

Dubai Airports' guidance still specifies that liquids in hand luggage should be in containers of no more than 100ml. Although the new technology is capable of screening larger volumes, official regulations have not been updated to reflect this yet. Therefore, passengers should continue to adhere to the 100ml liquid rule until formally advised otherwise. The gradual nature of the rollout also means you may encounter old and new systems, so paying close attention to staff instructions remains crucial.
