An Electric-First Future
The upcoming third-generation GLA marks a major strategic shift for Mercedes-Benz. It is built on the new Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), a platform designed with an "electric-first" philosophy. This means that while internal combustion engines are
still supported, the vehicle's core design is optimized for battery-electric performance. This move will see the new GLA effectively replace both the current GLA and the all-electric EQA, unifying the company's compact SUV offering under a single nameplate. The electric versions are expected to launch first, with hybrid models following. This strategy reverses the company's previous approach and signals a clear commitment to electrification in a highly competitive market segment.
Meet the All-Electric GLA
The highlight of the new lineup is the fully electric GLA. It will be available in several variants, including a range-topping GLA 350 4MATIC Electric with a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup producing around 349 horsepower. A single-motor GLA 250+ Electric will also be offered, with around 268 horsepower. These models will be equipped with an 85 kWh battery pack, with WLTP range estimates reaching up to an impressive 657 kilometres. A key technological leap is the adoption of an 800-volt architecture, allowing for ultra-fast DC charging. Mercedes claims this can add up to 270 kilometres of range in just ten minutes at a compatible charger, a feature that will be a significant advantage for users.
The Efficient Hybrid Option
For those not ready to make the full switch to electric, Mercedes-Benz will offer a technologically advanced hybrid option. These models will use a newly developed 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine combined with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. An electric motor is integrated directly into the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, providing an additional power boost and enabling short-distance electric-only driving in urban scenarios. This setup is designed to significantly improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions while still delivering the smooth performance expected from the brand.
A Fresh Look and More Space
The redesign extends far beyond the powertrain. The new GLA is significantly larger than its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase that translates into more legroom and overall interior space for passengers. The exterior styling is a radical departure, featuring a sportier silhouette, an illuminated front grille, and distinctive star-shaped daytime running lights. Inside, the cabin receives a major upgrade, highlighted by the MBUX Superscreen. This massive display spans nearly the entire width of the dashboard, integrating the driver's display, central infotainment, and a screen for the front passenger into a single unit. Materials are said to be more refined, and a panoramic roof will come as standard, creating a more open and luxurious feel.
Impact on the Indian Market
While Mercedes-Benz India has not yet confirmed the official launch timeline, the new GLA is expected to arrive in the country by early 2027, following its international debut. The GLA has been a critical entry point to the Mercedes-Benz brand for many Indian buyers, and its success is vital. The introduction of electric and sophisticated hybrid options will place it in direct competition with rivals like the BMW iX1 and Audi Q4 e-tron. By offering a wider range of powertrain choices, Mercedes-Benz is positioning the new GLA to appeal to a broader set of customers, from traditional petrol buyers to early adopters of electric vehicles, future-proofing one of its most important models in the Indian market.
