The Vande Bharat Advantage
The primary 'faster' option connecting the national capital to the holy city is the Vande Bharat Express (Train No. 22436/22435). This chair-car train has significantly reduced travel time compared to other rail options, offering an experience closer
to air travel but with the convenience of city-centre stations. It completes the roughly 760-770 km journey in approximately eight hours, making it a highly competitive choice for those who value both speed and comfort. The train runs six days a week, with no service on Thursdays.
Timings and Schedule
Before booking, double-check the train timings to ensure they fit your schedule. The train from New Delhi (NDLS) departs bright and early at 6:00 AM, arriving at Varanasi Junction (BSB) at 2:00 PM. The return journey from Varanasi begins at 3:00 PM, reaching New Delhi at 11:00 PM. The train has only two stops in between: Kanpur Central and Prayagraj Junction, which contributes to its speedy journey. This schedule allows for a full day of travel without the hassles of an overnight journey.
Ticket Prices and Classes
The Vande Bharat offers two classes of travel: AC Chair Car (CC) and Executive Chair Car (EC). Executive Class offers more spacious seating and premium services, including 360-degree rotating seats. Fares are dynamic and can fluctuate based on demand. As a general guide, expect CC fares to be in the range of ₹1,700-₹1,800 and EC fares around ₹3,000-₹3,500. These prices typically include catering charges for breakfast, lunch, and snacks, which can be opted out of during booking if you prefer.
Onboard Experience and Food
The train is known for its modern amenities, including clean bio-vacuum toilets, onboard Wi-Fi, and a GPS-based passenger information system. Seats are comfortable and designed for a pleasant journey. When it comes to food, if you opt-in, meals are served at your seat. You can also bring your own food, as many passengers prefer home-cooked meals. However, given the short halts, relying on station vendors is not a practical option.
Luggage and Packing
While standard Indian Railways luggage allowances apply, the Vande Bharat's chair-car design means space can be a constraint. There are overhead racks for cabin-sized bags and some space between seats for larger suitcases. However, travellers with multiple large bags might find it challenging. Packing smartly is key. If you have substantial luggage, you might find the Executive Class offers a bit more room to manage your belongings comfortably.
Booking Process and Tips
Tickets can be booked via the official IRCTC website or the Rail Connect app. The booking window typically opens 60 days in advance, and seats on this popular train fill up quickly, so it's wise to book early. Unlike other trains, the Vande Bharat does not have a Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) category; your ticket will either be confirmed or waitlisted. A waitlisted e-ticket is automatically cancelled if it doesn't get confirmed, and you cannot board the train with it. For last-minute plans, Indian Railways now allows booking of vacant seats up to 15 minutes before departure if available.
Vande Bharat vs. Flying
A flight from Delhi to Varanasi takes about 90 minutes. However, when you factor in travel time to and from the airport, check-in, and security, the total door-to-door time can easily stretch to 5-6 hours. The Vande Bharat's 8-hour journey from one city centre to another is a compelling alternative, often involving less overall hassle and providing a comfortable, scenic journey at a competitive price point.
