Good Pain vs. Bad Pain
Recognising the difference between productive discomfort and damaging pain is the most critical skill for a sustainable fitness journey. 'Good pain' is typically the dull, generalised ache or burning sensation in your muscles during a tough workout, or the stiffness
that sets in a day or two later. This is known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS), and it's a normal sign that your muscles have been challenged and are now repairing and growing stronger. This type of discomfort is diffuse, affecting the whole muscle you worked, and subsides on its own within a few days. In contrast, 'bad pain' is your body's stop signal. This pain is often sharp, stabbing, or sudden. It tends to be localised to a specific point, often in or around a joint, and it might get worse as you continue the movement. This is not something to be ignored, as it often signals an underlying injury, strain, or inflammation that requires immediate attention.
Red Flags You Shouldn't Ignore
Certain types of pain demand that you stop your activity immediately. Pushing through these can turn a minor issue into a major, long-term injury. Be alert for sharp, shooting, or stabbing sensations that occur mid-movement. Pain that is concentrated in your joints—like your knees, shoulders, or hips—is a significant warning sign, as joints should not hurt during exercise. Other red flags include any feeling of numbness, tingling, or electrical-like sensations, which could indicate nerve involvement. If you notice sudden swelling, bruising, or a popping sound at the moment of pain, it’s a clear indication of tissue damage. Likewise, if a movement feels unstable, or if the pain is so significant that you have to alter your form to avoid it, you are risking a compensatory injury, where other parts of your body take on strain in unnatural ways.
How to Modify, Not Quit
Experiencing pain doesn't always mean you have to stop exercising altogether. In many cases, intelligent modification is the answer. If a particular exercise hurts, the first step is to check your form. Poor technique is a common cause of strain. If your form is correct, consider reducing the load. Lifting lighter weights can often allow you to complete the movement without pain. Another effective modification is to reduce the range of motion. For example, performing a partial squat instead of a full-depth one might be pain-free. You can also slow down the tempo of the movement, which reduces stress on your tissues. If a high-impact activity like running is causing joint pain, switching to a low-impact alternative such as swimming, cycling, or using an elliptical machine can help you maintain cardiovascular fitness without the jarring force.
The Power of Listening to Your Body
Ultimately, the goal is to build a healthier relationship with movement, one where you learn to interpret your body's feedback. Rest isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a critical component of recovery and strength-building. If pain from a workout is significantly worse hours later or the next day, it's a sign that the activity was too intense. A good rule of thumb is that exercise should not increase your baseline pain by more than a couple of points on a 10-point scale. Pushing through severe pain not only risks injuries like stress fractures and muscle tears but can also lead to overtraining syndrome or, in rare cases, serious conditions like rhabdomyolysis, where muscle breakdown products flood the bloodstream and can damage the kidneys.
