In a move celebrated by tourists and residents alike, Central Railway has launched a new daily express train connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai with Sawantwadi Road in the Sindhudurg district. This service directly addresses
a long-standing demand for more reliable and frequent transport to the South Konkan region. The train, numbered 15087 for the journey from CSMT and 15088 for the return, is an overnight service designed for convenience. It departs from CSMT late at night, around 11:55 PM, and arrives at Sawantwadi Road the following afternoon at approximately 2:15 PM. The return journey leaves Sawantwadi in the evening, ensuring passengers can be back in Mumbai by early morning. With a mix of AC, sleeper, and general coaches, the train caters to various budgets and is expected to significantly ease the passenger load on other Konkan-bound trains.
First Stop: The Charms of Ratnagiri
One of the major stops on this new route is Ratnagiri, a town synonymous with Alphonso mangoes and rich history. Alighting here puts you within reach of several key attractions. You can explore Thibaw Palace, the former residence of the exiled king of Myanmar, or visit the birthplace of the freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak.
