For years, Indian strawberry farmers, especially in the primary growing belt of Mahabaleshwar, have been almost entirely dependent on imported planting material. These 'mother plants' or 'runners' are typically sourced from countries like the United States,
Spain, and Italy. This reliance creates several challenges. Farmers face high upfront costs for these plants, which can be a significant gamble considering the risks involved in cultivation, such as unpredictable weather. For a small farm, this initial outlay can amount to thousands of dollars each season. Furthermore, these foreign varieties are bred for temperate climates and may not be perfectly suited to India's diverse and often harsh growing conditions, requiring intensive management and making them vulnerable to local pests and diseases.
A 'Made in India' Berry Initiative
Recognising these vulnerabilities, India's agricultural sector is now cultivating a homegrown solution. The initiative aims to develop indigenous strawberry cultivars that are better suited to local conditions, a move that aligns with the broader national goal of agricultural self-reliance. Research institutions are at the forefront of this effort. For instance, the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth has partnered with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre to experiment with breeding techniques to create India's first climate-resilient strawberry variety. The ambition is not just to substitute imports but to elevate India into the ranks of the world's leading strawberry producers, a group often called the 'strawberry superpowers'.
The Science of a Better Berry
Developing a new strawberry variety is a long and meticulous process that can take over a decade. Researchers are focusing on breeding plants that offer improved disease resistance, better yield stability, and greater tolerance for India's varied climatic zones. The goal is to create cultivars that can thrive not just in the cool climes of Mahabaleshwar, which accounts for about 85% of India's production, but potentially in other parts of the country as well. Success would mean creating strawberries that are not only easier and cheaper to grow but also possess qualities that consumers love, such as excellent flavour and a longer shelf life. This scientific endeavour is a strategic bet on innovation as a driver of long-term agricultural competitiveness.
Lower Costs and Higher Profits for Farmers
The most immediate and significant impact of this initiative will be felt by the farmers. Access to domestically produced, affordable planting material could dramatically lower their production costs. It would eliminate the logistical headaches and premium prices associated with importing plants, reducing the financial risk that growers undertake each season. Locally adapted varieties are also expected to provide more consistent and reliable yields, helping to stabilise farmer incomes. This stability might encourage more growers to enter strawberry cultivation, expanding the industry's footprint beyond its current regional strongholds and making it a more accessible and profitable venture for a wider agricultural community.
From the Lab to the Land
While the development of new, commercially viable strawberry varieties will take time, the momentum is building. The transition from imported genetics to homegrown alternatives will be gradual, as new cultivars must first prove their performance in extensive field trials. However, the initiative represents a potential turning point for Indian horticulture. Beyond strawberries, a successful model for developing domestic plant varieties could be applied to other crops where India relies on imports. For consumers, this could eventually lead to a more stable supply of high-quality strawberries throughout the year, potentially at more consistent prices.
