One Ticket to the Wilderness
Forget the hassle of juggling separate bookings for trains, hotels, and highly coveted safari permits. IRCTC's new initiative, called 'Vandarshan', bundles these elements into a single, all-inclusive package. This collaboration aims to provide tourists
with seamless access to top wildlife destinations via rail. The packages are designed to cover confirmed train tickets, accommodation, local transportation, and, most importantly, guaranteed wildlife safari permits, which often sell out months in advance. The initial launch features five curated itineraries aimed at families, photographers, and first-time safari-goers, making the state's protected forests more accessible than ever.
Tadoba: The Premier Tiger Destination
Often called 'The Jewel of Vidarbha', Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is Maharashtra's oldest and largest national park and the star of this new programme. It has gained a formidable reputation for tiger sightings, boasting one of the highest densities of the big cat in the country. The park's dry deciduous forests and numerous waterbodies, like Tadoba Lake, create a perfect habitat for a wide array of wildlife. Beyond the majestic Bengal tiger, visitors on a jeep safari can frequently spot leopards, sloth bears, gaur (Indian bison), and packs of dholes (wild dogs). The best time for tiger sightings is typically between February and May, when animals gather near the remaining water sources.
Pench: In the Land of The Jungle Book
Straddling the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, Pench National Park is famously believed to be the setting for Rudyard Kipling's classic, 'The Jungle Book'. The landscape here is a rich tapestry of teak forests, rolling hills, and the Pench River, which flows through its heart. While it is a prominent tiger reserve, Pench offers a different kind of magic. It is an excellent place to see elusive leopards and is known for its population of wild dogs. The park is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 300 species recorded. A safari here feels like stepping into a storybook, with every turn revealing new characters, from sambar deer to playful langurs.
Tipeshwar: Maharashtra's Hidden Gem
The inclusion of Tipeshwar Wildlife Sanctuary is a fantastic opportunity for those looking to explore a path less travelled. Covering a compact area, this sanctuary is an emerging tiger destination that offers a quieter, more intimate wilderness experience compared to its more famous counterparts. Known as the 'Green Oasis' of the region, its landscape consists of teak forests, bamboo groves, and hilly terrain. In recent years, Tipeshwar has gained attention for its growing population of tigers, including breeding tigresses. Besides tigers, it is a habitat for leopards, sloth bears, and a diverse range of birds, making it a rewarding destination for dedicated wildlife enthusiasts.
How to Plan Your Adventure
The IRCTC 'Vandarshan' packages are designed as four-night, five-day trips, primarily departing from Mumbai CSMT on the Vidarbha Express. These rail-based tours are intended to streamline the entire travel process, eliminating the uncertainty that often comes with planning a safari holiday. While specific pricing is yet to be fully detailed, the value lies in the convenience and the guarantee of safari permits, especially for popular parks like Tadoba where they are notoriously difficult to secure. By partnering directly with the Maharashtra Forest Department, IRCTC aims to boost responsible and sustainable tourism, making these incredible natural treasures accessible to all who wish to experience them.
