An Overnight Revolution
The single biggest update for the Delhi-Varanasi route is the proposed introduction of a Vande Bharat Sleeper Express. Unlike the current chair-car service, this new train will allow passengers to travel overnight, arriving at their destination fresh
in the morning. This is a game-changer for business travellers and pilgrims alike, as it eliminates the need for a day-long journey and the cost of a hotel for one night. Reports suggest this will be the second Vande Bharat Sleeper in the country, following the service on the Howrah-Kamakhya route. The new service aims to manage the heavy passenger rush, especially during festive seasons like Diwali and Chhath Puja.
Proposed Timings and Route
According to proposed schedules, the service will be a convenient overnight connection. The train is expected to depart from both New Delhi and Varanasi Cantt at around 9:20 PM, reaching the destination at 5:00 AM the next morning. The entire journey is estimated to take approximately 7 hours and 40 minutes. The planned route will include crucial stops at Prayagraj and Kanpur, two of Uttar Pradesh's major cities. From Varanasi, the train is slated to reach Prayagraj by 10:45 PM and Kanpur Central around 12:35 AM before its final leg to New Delhi. While these timings are widely reported, the final schedule is still pending an official announcement from the Railway Board.
Speed and Comfort Combined
The Vande Bharat Sleeper is not just about convenience; it's about speed and modern comfort. The train is expected to operate at speeds between 130 km/h and 160 km/h, a significant upgrade that will reduce travel time. The final operational speed will depend on track conditions and clearances from the 'Mission Raftaar' project, which aims to improve railway infrastructure for higher speeds. The train will feature a 16-coach configuration with a capacity for 823 passengers. This includes 11 AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches, and one First AC coach, all equipped with the state-of-the-art amenities the Vande Bharat brand is known for, such as automatic doors, bio-vacuum toilets, and advanced safety systems.
Impact on an Arterial Route
The Delhi-Varanasi line is the original Vande Bharat route, inaugurated in 2019, and remains one of the network's busiest. The introduction of a sleeper version is a logical next step in its evolution. It directly competes with popular overnight trains and offers a premium alternative that could also draw passengers away from buses and even some flights. By providing a fast, comfortable, and time-saving overnight option, Indian Railways is aiming to capture a larger share of the traffic on this vital economic and spiritual corridor. This move aligns with the broader strategy of modernising the rail network and expanding the Vande Bharat service, which now covers over 100 routes across India.
When Can You Book a Ticket?
While there has been considerable buzz about the launch, with some reports initially pointing to a mid-October inauguration, an official date has not yet been confirmed by Indian Railways. Officials have reportedly been targeting a launch around the Diwali season to cater to the festive rush. However, the latest reports suggest the launch may be scheduled for November 2026, pending the completion of trial runs. Passengers eager to experience the new service should wait for a formal announcement from the Railway Board regarding the final timetable, fare structure, and the official start date for bookings on the IRCTC platform.
