More Than Just an Oil Artery
When most people think of the Strait of Hormuz, they picture supertankers laden with crude oil. For decades, this has been accurate; the strait is the world's most important chokepoint for petroleum. However, this focus on energy has often overshadowed
the waterway's equally vital role in another fundamental sector: agriculture. Before the recent conflict brought shipping to a standstill, a significant portion of the world's fertiliser supply passed through this very corridor every day. This stream of nutrients—from urea and ammonia to sulphur and phosphates—formed an invisible but essential link in the chain that puts food on tables globally. The reliance on this single passage meant that global food security was, and remains, intrinsically tied to the geopolitical stability of the Persian Gulf.
The Gulf's Role as a Global Breadbasket-Feeder
The countries of the Persian Gulf became dominant players in the global fertiliser market thanks to their vast reserves of natural gas, a key ingredient for producing nitrogen-based fertilisers like ammonia and urea. Nations such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Iran invested heavily in production facilities, transforming their energy wealth into agricultural inputs sold worldwide. Qatar, in particular, emerged as a powerhouse, with some facilities accounting for a substantial share of all globally traded urea. For these nations, the Strait of Hormuz was the primary and, in many cases, only viable export route. This concentration of production and export capacity in one volatile region created a structural vulnerability in the global food system long before the outbreak of war. An estimated one-third of all globally traded fertiliser products navigated the strait, making it as critical for farmers in Asia and Africa as it was for oil consumers in the West.
A Pre-Existing Chain of Vulnerability
The risks associated with this dependency were not unknown. For years, analysts and international organisations pointed to the Strait of Hormuz as a potential flashpoint that could disrupt more than just energy markets. Prior incidents involving regional tensions, seized vessels, and military posturing served as stark reminders of how quickly the flow of goods could be threatened. The entire supply chain was fragile. Major importers like India, Brazil, Thailand, and even the United States depended on these reliable shipments to support their agricultural sectors. A disruption in the strait meant that farmers thousands of miles away could face soaring prices or outright shortages of the nutrients needed for planting season. This wasn't a hypothetical risk; it was a recognised fragility in a highly interconnected global system where the stability of a distant maritime corridor directly influenced crop yields and food prices across continents.
From Fertiliser Shortage to Food Prices
The connection between fertiliser availability and the cost of food is direct and profound. Mineral fertilisers are credited with supporting roughly half of the world's food production. When the supply of key components like urea or phosphate is disrupted, or when prices surge due to logistical bottlenecks and increased risk, farmers face a difficult choice. They can absorb the higher cost, which reduces their margins, or they can use less fertiliser. Using less fertiliser often leads to lower crop yields, meaning less grain, fruit, and vegetables are harvested. This reduction in supply, in turn, pushes up commodity prices in the global market. The price hikes eventually trickle down to consumers at the grocery store. The recent conflict has made this connection painfully clear, but the underlying mechanics—the dependence on a steady, affordable supply of fertiliser from the Gulf—was a defining feature of the global food economy for years.
