The Philosophy: Consistency Over Everything
At the core of Malaika's approach is a simple, powerful idea: consistency trumps intensity. Instead of chasing extreme diets or punishing workout trends, she focuses on what can be maintained day after day, year after year. Her routine is built on the belief
that small, regular efforts compound over time to create lasting health and resilience. This means no starving, no deprivation, and no fixation on shortcuts. She has openly shared that she does not believe in eliminating food groups, particularly carbohydrates, which she views as essential for energy. Her mantra is about balance and nourishment, proving that a disciplined lifestyle doesn't have to be a miserable one.
Ghar Ka Khaana: A Plate of Simple Nutrition
Malaika’s diet is a testament to the power of traditional, home-cooked Indian food. She famously carries her own 'dabbas' to work to ensure she's eating wholesome meals. Her lunch is often a balanced affair of roti, rice, dal, and sabzi. She doesn't shy away from staples, but focuses on portion control, often eating from a small bowl (katori) to manage quantities effectively. Recently, she even shared that she prefers a satisfying home-cooked meal over salads, which she doesn't particularly enjoy. Her meals are simple but nutrient-dense, with favourites including khichdi with vegetables, aloo gobi, and even simple bhindi. This approach keeps her diet enjoyable and culturally familiar, making it easier to stick with for the long haul.
Mindful Eating and Intermittent Fasting
Beyond what she eats, when she eats is a crucial part of her regimen. Malaika is a firm believer in intermittent fasting, typically following a pattern where she finishes her last meal by 7 p.m. and doesn't eat again until around noon the next day. She emphasizes that this is not about dieting or starvation but about giving her digestive system adequate rest. She starts her day not with food, but with liquids like warm jeera or lemon water, and often has a spoonful of ghee, an Ayurvedic practice she swears by. Her first meal breaks her fast and is usually something substantial and nourishing to fuel her for the day ahead.
Movement as a Daily Ritual
Exercise for Malaika isn't a chore; it's a non-negotiable part of her life. Her fitness routine is a dynamic mix of yoga, Pilates, strength training, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Yoga forms the cornerstone of her practice, enhancing flexibility, strength, and mental clarity. Pilates is her go-to for core strength and posture, while HIIT sessions, often involving equipment-free exercises like jump squats and high knees, keep her cardiovascular health in top shape. She also incorporates kettlebell workouts to build functional strength. This variety prevents boredom and ensures her body is challenged in different ways, building not just an aesthetic physique but long-term resilience and mobility.
