A State-Wide Connectivity Push
Madhya Pradesh is in the midst of an ambitious aviation expansion, moving to upgrade and build new airports to enhance regional connectivity. The overarching goal is to make every corner of the state more accessible, boosting tourism, trade, and overall
economic growth. This includes not just enhancing major hubs but also developing airstrips in more remote locations into full-fledged airports. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced plans to expand the state's aviation network significantly, aiming for 10 operational airports and a policy of establishing an airport every 150 kilometres. This initiative, supported by the Centre's UDAN scheme, is set to drastically reduce reliance on road and rail for long-haul journeys within and into the state, directly impacting travel times.
Gwalior’s New Gateway
Gwalior's Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia Airport has received a monumental upgrade with a new terminal building. Inaugurated in 2024, the new facility is a massive improvement, expanding the airport's area and boosting its peak-hour passenger handling capacity from around 150 to 1400. Constructed at a cost of nearly ₹500 crore, the terminal features modern amenities like four passenger boarding bridges, expanded check-in counters, and an apron large enough to park multiple Airbus A320 and ATR-72 aircraft. For travellers, this translates to a more seamless experience with reduced congestion and the potential for more direct flights from major Indian cities, making Gwalior and its surrounding heritage sites like Orchha more accessible than ever.
Jabalpur: Access to Wildlife Corridors
Jabalpur's airport, the primary gateway to the wildlife havens of Kanha and Bandhavgarh National Parks, has also undergone a significant expansion. A new terminal building was inaugurated in March 2024 to handle rising passenger traffic. This upgrade increased the peak-hour capacity to handle around 800 passengers and features modern facilities, including aerobridges, to make boarding faster and more convenient. The runway was also extended to accommodate larger aircraft like the Airbus A320. This enhancement is crucial for tourism, as it allows for more direct flights from different parts of the country, cutting down the multi-leg journeys that were often required to reach the region's famed tiger reserves.
Rewa and Regional Connectivity
The development of airports in smaller cities like Rewa is a cornerstone of the state's strategy to improve last-mile connectivity. After receiving its operating license, Rewa Airport has started changing travel dynamics in the Vindhya region. New direct flights connecting Rewa to Bhopal, Kolkata, and other cities have drastically cut travel times. For instance, the flight between Bhopal and Rewa takes about 1.5 hours, compared to a 10-hour train journey. Buoyed by strong initial passenger demand, authorities are already planning to expand Rewa's runway to accommodate larger Airbus A320 aircraft, which would open up even more routes. This focus on regional hubs is making previously hard-to-reach areas accessible in a fraction of the time.
