The New Fee Structure for Adults
The Government of India has revised the fee structure for passport services, with the new rates taking effect from July 1, 2026. For any adult applying for a fresh passport or getting one re-issued, the cost for a standard 36-page booklet is now ₹2,500.
If you are a frequent traveller and anticipate needing more space for visas and stamps, a 60-page jumbo booklet is available for ₹3,500. These costs apply to both first-time applicants and those renewing their existing passports under the normal processing timeline. This marks a significant increase from the previous rates, making it essential to factor this updated cost into your travel budget from the very beginning. The reason for the hike, the first in many years, is attributed to rising operational costs and enhanced security features in the newer passports.
When Speed Costs More: Tatkaal Fees
For those who need a passport urgently, the Tatkaal scheme offers a much faster processing time, often within a few working days, compared to the several weeks required for the normal process. However, this convenience comes at a premium. Under the revised structure, the total fee for a 36-page adult passport under the Tatkaal scheme is now ₹5,000. For a 60-page jumbo booklet, the Tatkaal fee is ₹6,000. Essentially, the Tatkaal service adds a flat surcharge on top of the regular passport fee for expedited handling. This option is ideal for unexpected travel plans or last-minute requirements, but for planned trips, applying through the normal route well in advance can lead to significant savings.
Special Rates for Minors and Seniors
The new fee structure also includes specific rates for minors and concessions for senior citizens. For a minor below the age of 18, a fresh 36-page passport now costs ₹1,750 under the normal scheme. The Tatkaal option for minors will set you back ₹4,250. It's important to note that passports for minors are typically valid for five years or until they turn 18, whichever comes first. In a welcome move, the government has retained a 10% discount on the application fee for fresh passports for two groups: children up to the age of eight and senior citizens above the age of 60. This concession, however, applies only to fresh applications and not to re-issues.
Lost or Damaged Passports: A Costly Affair
Misplacing your passport or having it damaged can be a stressful experience, and replacing it has now become more expensive. The fee for replacing a lost, stolen, or damaged 36-page passport is ₹5,000 under the normal scheme. If you need a replacement urgently via the Tatkaal service, the cost rises to ₹7,500. For a 60-page booklet, the replacement costs are even higher: ₹6,000 for normal processing and ₹8,500 for Tatkaal. These steep fees underscore the importance of keeping your passport in a safe and secure location at all times, both at home and while travelling.
How to Pay and Apply the Right Way
All passport application payments must be made online through the official Passport Seva Portal before you can book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK). The portal has a built-in fee calculator to help you determine the exact amount for your specific needs, whether it's for a fresh application, re-issue, or a change in particulars. You can pay using a credit/debit card, internet banking (State Bank of India and other banks), or via an SBI bank challan. After a successful payment, you can track the status on the portal. Always use the official government website to avoid fraudulent third-party sites that may charge extra or compromise your personal data.
