Meet the Urus SE
The new king of the hill is the Lamborghini Urus SE. While the brand has released several versions of its game-changing SUV, the SE marks a pivotal moment. It's the first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of the Urus, signaling a major step in Lamborghini's
strategy towards electrification. Don't let the term 'hybrid' fool you into thinking it has gone soft; in the world of supercars, hybridisation is the new frontier for performance. The SE combines the familiar twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine with a potent electric motor, creating a synergy that delivers unprecedented power and a distinctly new driving experience for the brand's best-selling model.
A New Breed of Power
At the heart of the Urus SE is a re-engineered powertrain. The V8 on its own produces a formidable 620 horsepower. This is paired with a 192-horsepower electric motor integrated into the eight-speed automatic transmission. Together, they produce a staggering combined output of 800 horsepower (CV) and 950 Nm of torque. This makes the Urus SE the most powerful production SUV Lamborghini has ever created. The electric motor isn't just for efficiency; it provides instant torque for blistering acceleration and can also power the vehicle on its own for over 60 km, offering silent, emission-free driving in urban environments.
The Numbers Don't Lie
So, is it the fastest? The answer is nuanced. The Urus SE rockets from 0-100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. This is quicker than the Urus S (3.5s) but a tenth of a second slower than the lighter, track-focused Urus Performante (3.3s). Where the SE claims a clear victory is top speed. It can reach 312 km/h, making it the fastest Urus in terms of outright velocity, edging out the Performante's 306 km/h. The headline's claim of being 'faster' is therefore true, depending on the metric. It's the most powerful and has the highest top speed, even if its lighter sibling is marginally quicker off the line. More recently, a new Urus SE Performante model was announced, matching the 3.3 second sprint time of the old non-hybrid Performante and boosting power even further to over 800hp.
More Than Just Straight-Line Speed
Performance isn't just about raw acceleration. Lamborghini has engineered the SE to handle its immense power with new levels of precision. The addition of the 25.9-kWh battery pack, located under the floor, helps to lower the vehicle's center of gravity. The SE also debuts a new torque vectoring system and an electronically controlled rear differential to improve handling and responsiveness in corners. While the Performante model was known for its stiff, track-ready steel springs, the SE features an adaptive air suspension designed to offer a broader range of capabilities—from comfortable cruising to aggressive track driving. This makes the SE not just a powerhouse, but a more versatile and technologically advanced machine.
A Bridge to an Electric Future
The Urus SE is more than just another fast SUV; it's a strategic move for Lamborghini. It allows the brand to meet tightening emissions regulations while simultaneously pushing the envelope of what a hybrid can be. With an 80% reduction in emissions compared to its purely internal combustion counterparts, the SE proves that extreme performance and environmental consciousness are no longer mutually exclusive concepts. This model serves as a crucial bridge, introducing Lamborghini's loyal customer base to electrification without compromising on the power, noise, and drama expected from the brand. It lays the groundwork for future hybrid supercars and the company's eventual shift towards a fully electric lineup.
