A Race Against Time
As India assumes the BRICS chairmanship for 2026, all eyes are on New Delhi, the host city for the high-profile summit on September 12-13. In response, a comprehensive preparedness plan has been launched, coordinated at the highest levels, including by
Delhi's Lieutenant Governor, Taranjit Singh Sandhu. The directive is clear: ensure seamless multi-agency coordination and time-bound execution to present a clean, green, and well-maintained face to international delegates. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is at the forefront of this effort, deploying extensive resources for round-the-clock sanitation, road repairs, and city-wide beautification. The goal, as stated by officials, is to achieve international standards of urban management and uphold India's tradition of 'Atithi Devo Bhava' (The guest is equivalent to God).
Roads, Roundabouts, and a Green Makeover
The most visible part of the preparation involves a significant upgrade to the city's infrastructure and aesthetics. The NDMC has identified 41 major roads, which have been organized into 14 circles, each managed by a nodal officer to ensure daily inspections and prompt issue resolution. The horticulture department is focusing on landscaping, planting seasonal flowers, greening barren patches, and maintaining green corridors. A major beautification drive will see 15 locations adorned with floral boards, nine with flower fountains, and 17 roundabouts receiving special illumination and decor. Potholes and footpaths are also being repaired to ensure smooth transit for the delegates. To tackle potential waterlogging from rain, drainage systems are being strengthened and teams are on standby.
Sanitation and Security at the Forefront
Beyond the cosmetic upgrades, a robust operational plan is in place. From September 9 to 14, special sanitation arrangements will be active, including additional staff, night-duty teams, and intensive cleaning using mechanical sweepers. Temporary dustbins and mobile toilets will be deployed, and special drives will be conducted to remove stray animals from key areas. Security and traffic management are critical components, with the L-G directing all stakeholder agencies to ensure robust protocols and a smooth flow of traffic. A 24x7 command and control centre will monitor all civic services in real-time using CCTV surveillance and field reports to enable rapid responses. Furthermore, emergency medical readiness is a priority, with ambulances and medical teams to be deployed at strategic locations.
Engaging the City and Its People
The preparations extend beyond official duties, with efforts to involve the community. The NDMC is coordinating with hotels, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and Market Traders Associations to maintain cleanliness and civic discipline. The summit's branding will be visible across the city, displayed on 154 digital screens and at public utilities. The preparations also account for a series of events associated with the summit, such as a BRICS Bazaar, a BRICS Run & Ride, and a Food Festival, each with dedicated nodal officers to ensure smooth execution. This multi-pronged approach aims to not only prepare the city's infrastructure but also to create an atmosphere of welcome and participation for both residents and international visitors.
