One-Click Wildlife Adventure
In a significant move for wildlife tourism, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the Maharashtra Forest Department have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to offer all-in-one tour packages. Announced on International
Tiger Day, this initiative, called 'Vandarshan', is designed to streamline travel for wildlife enthusiasts. The collaboration removes the major hassle of planning a safari holiday: juggling separate bookings for trains, hotels, and elusive safari permits. Now, travellers can book a complete itinerary through a single transaction, covering confirmed train tickets, accommodation, local road transport, and guaranteed safari access.
Which Parks Are Included?
The initial launch of the Vandarshan packages focuses on six key protected areas in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. These include four premier Tiger Reserves: Tadoba-Andhari, Pench, Navegaon-Nagzira, and Bor. In addition to these, the circuits also cover two important wildlife sanctuaries, Umred Karhandla and Tipeshwar. This selection offers a fantastic cross-section of the state's rich biodiversity. The tours are structured as four-night, five-day itineraries, primarily departing from Mumbai CSMT on the Vidarbha Express. This provides a convenient gateway for travellers looking to explore these wild landscapes.
Tadoba: The Jewel of Vidarbha
Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve is often called the 'Jewel of Vidarbha' and is Maharashtra's oldest and largest National Park. It is globally renowned for its high density of Bengal tigers, offering some of the most reliable tiger sighting opportunities in India. The park's landscape is a mix of dense forests, sprawling meadows, and serene lakes, most notably Tadoba Lake and Irai Lake. Beyond the majestic tiger, Tadoba is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including leopards, sloth bears, gaur (Indian bison), and wild dogs. Its rich avian population, with over 280 species, also makes it a paradise for birdwatchers.
Pench: Land of The Jungle Book
Straddling the border of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, Pench National Park holds a special place in literary history as the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book'. The Pench River winds through the park, nurturing a vibrant ecosystem of teak forests and rolling hills. While it is a key tiger reserve, Pench is also celebrated for its thriving population of leopards, wild dogs (dholes), and a high density of prey like chital and sambar deer. The park boasts a rich birdlife of over 210 species, and its diverse habitats support a wide array of creatures, from the massive gaur to the elusive Indian wolf.
What the Packages Cover
The core value of the IRCTC Vandarshan package is its all-inclusive nature. Each booking bundles the key components of a wildlife trip. This includes confirmed return train travel, which simplifies reaching the railheads nearest to the parks, such as Nagpur or Gondia. From there, local transfers by road to the designated hotels or resorts are arranged. Accommodation for the duration of the tour is part of the package. Most importantly, the packages come with guaranteed safari permits. Obtaining these permits online can be a major challenge as they are released months in advance and sell out within minutes, so their inclusion is a significant benefit for tourists.
How to Book Your Tour
These wildlife circuit packages can be booked directly through IRCTC's official tourism portal, www.irctctourism.com. On the website, users can navigate to the 'Packages' section and search for the 'Vandarshan' or specific wildlife tours. The platform provides details on itineraries, inclusions, and costs. Bookings can also be made via the IRCTC Tourism mobile app. For specific queries or group bookings, travellers can contact IRCTC's tourism helpdesk via the phone numbers or email address listed on their website.
