Caught on Camera
In mid-July 2026, photographers spotted a near-production prototype of KTM's next-generation 790 Adventure undergoing testing in Austria. The bike, though camouflaged, reveals a comprehensive redesign that goes far beyond a simple facelift. This isn't
just about new colours; it's a signal that KTM is investing heavily in the future of its most accessible middleweight adventure machine, which has had a unique history of debuting, being replaced by the 890, and then returning as a more value-focused option. The new spy shots suggest its next chapter will be its most significant yet.
A Completely New Look
The most striking change is the complete overhaul of the front end. The polarising split-headlight design is gone, replaced by a modern, compact projector LED headlamp flanked by integrated DRLs. This new face is not only more in line with KTM's latest design language seen on bikes like the new 790 Duke, but it also promises better illumination for those late-night rides. The entire profile of the bike appears leaner and sportier, with redesigned bodywork and a slimmer fuel tank area. Interestingly, some reports suggest KTM might be moving away from the signature low-slung fuel pods in favour of a more traditional tank layout, though the fairing appears wider, possibly to maintain fuel capacity.
More Than Skin Deep
While the 799cc parallel-twin engine is expected to be carried over with minor tweaks for emissions and refinement, the chassis and hardware see notable updates. The test mule was spotted with WP Apex suspension at both ends, and crucially, new WP-branded brake callipers, suggesting a move to in-house braking components similar to the updated 790 Duke. This points to an overall upgrade in the bike's handling and stopping power. The test bike retains its off-road-focused 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel combination, confirming its commitment to tackling the rough stuff. Ergonomics also appear to have been revised, with a new single-piece seat replacing the previous split-seat setup.
Reshaping the Adventure Lineup
This refresh is a strategic move for KTM. By giving the 790 Adventure a distinct, modern identity, the company creates more breathing room between it and its higher-spec sibling, the 890 Adventure. While the 890 will likely continue as the premium, performance-oriented choice, this new 790 is being positioned as a thoroughly modern, capable, and visually appealing entry point into KTM's adventure world. The test bike was seen with the current 5-inch TFT display, reinforcing the idea that KTM will use technology and feature levels to differentiate its models. This ensures riders have a clear choice based on both budget and desired performance.
The Road Ahead
Given how complete the prototype appears, the bike looks close to production-ready. The typical timeline for the industry points towards a potential official unveil at one of the major European motorcycle shows like EICMA in late 2026, with bikes likely arriving in showrooms as a 2027 model. This would give KTM a fresh contender in the fiercely competitive middleweight adventure segment, ready to take on rivals from across the globe. For now, riders can only scrutinise the spy shots and speculate, but it’s clear that a major evolution for the 790 Adventure is no longer a question of 'if', but 'when'.
