In recent years, a movement towards natural and homemade products has surged, with social media platforms filled with recipes for everything from face masks to cleaning supplies. The logic seems appealing: if you can control the ingredients, you can create
a purer, safer, and more affordable product. This has led many well-intentioned people to try making their own sunscreen. The recipes often feature ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils, sometimes with the addition of zinc oxide powder. The promise is simple — effective sun protection without the chemicals found in many commercial products. However, dermatologists and scientists are issuing a clear warning: this is one DIY project you should absolutely skip.
Understanding UVA vs. UVB Rays
To grasp why homemade sunscreen is so risky, it's important to know what you're protecting against. The sun emits two main types of harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays: UVA and UVB. Think of UVB as the 'burning' rays; they have a shorter wavelength, affect the skin's surface, and are the primary cause of sunburn. UVA rays are the 'ageing' rays. They have a longer wavelength that penetrates deep into the skin, contributing to wrinkles, fine lines, and long-term cell damage. Both types of rays are proven to increase the risk of skin cancer. A sunscreen labelled 'broad-spectrum' has been tested to protect against both UVA and UVB damage, a critical feature for comprehensive skin health.
The Unregulated World of DIY SPF
The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) on a commercial bottle of sunscreen is not a guess; it's a highly regulated and scientifically determined measurement. In a laboratory setting, a precise amount of sunscreen (2mg per square centimetre) is applied to human skin, which is then exposed to a controlled UV source. The SPF number represents the ratio of how long it takes for protected skin to burn compared to unprotected skin. This rigorous testing is impossible to replicate in a home kitchen. Even if you use an ingredient with known UV-blocking properties like zinc oxide, there is no way to guarantee its effectiveness or final SPF value in a homemade mixture. The American Academy of Dermatology states that homemade sunscreens are not proven to be effective and can leave users vulnerable to serious skin damage.
The Problem with Particle Distribution
One of the biggest flaws in DIY sunscreen is the formulation itself. Commercial manufacturers use specialised equipment to ensure that protective particles, like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, are evenly and stably distributed throughout the cream. At home, it's impossible to achieve this level of dispersion. Zinc oxide particles, for example, have a tendency to clump together, creating an uneven shield on your skin. This means some patches of your skin could be getting significant protection while others are left completely exposed, creating a false and dangerous sense of security. You might not see a sunburn and assume you're safe, but invisible UVA damage could still be occurring.
Natural Oils Are Not a Substitute
Many online recipes claim that natural oils like coconut, carrot seed, or raspberry seed oil have high SPF values. This is dangerously misleading. While some studies show these oils have minimal UV-blocking properties, their SPF levels are extremely low and unreliable, often ranging from just SPF 2 to 8. This is far below the SPF 30 or higher recommended by dermatologists. In fact, applying oils to the skin without proper sunscreen can sometimes attract more sunlight, essentially 'frying' the skin and increasing penetration of UV rays. These oils also lack the broad-spectrum coverage needed to protect you from UVA rays.
Why You Should Trust Tested Products
Regulated sunscreens are required to undergo extensive testing for safety, efficacy, and stability. Manufacturers must prove their product provides the SPF level stated on the label, is water-resistant for a specified duration, and remains effective until its expiration date. Homemade concoctions have no such guarantees. They can separate, degrade in the heat, or grow bacteria, rendering them useless or even harmful. While the desire for natural ingredients is understandable, there are many commercially available mineral sunscreens that use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide and have passed rigorous safety and efficacy testing. These offer a much safer way to avoid chemical filters while ensuring you get the protection you need.
