The Origin: NASA's Clean Air Study
The story begins in 1989, when NASA, in partnership with the Associated Landscape Contractors of America, conducted research to see if common houseplants could help clean the air in sealed environments like space stations. In the study, scientists placed
individual plants inside small, sealed chambers and injected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene — chemicals commonly found in synthetic materials and household products. The results were promising: over 24 hours, certain plants were able to remove a significant percentage of these pollutants from the chamber. Species like the Peace Lily, Snake Plant, and Spider Plant proved effective in this controlled setting, giving birth to the popular idea that filling our homes with greenery could scrub the air clean.
The Problem with Lab Conditions
The catch, as subsequent research has repeatedly shown, is that your home is not a small, sealed laboratory chamber. The NASA experiments were conducted under highly controlled conditions that don't reflect a real-world living space. Your home or office has a much larger volume of air that is constantly being exchanged through doors, windows, and ventilation systems. This natural air exchange dilutes pollutants far more effectively and rapidly than a few potted plants can. A 2019 review by researchers at Drexel University looked at decades of studies and concluded that the rate at which plants remove VOCs is significantly slower than the rate of air exchange in a typical building.
How Many Plants Would It Actually Take?
To replicate the air-cleaning effects seen in the NASA lab, you would need an almost comical number of plants. Several analyses have extrapolated the data to normal-sized rooms, and the figures are staggering. According to one major review, you might need anywhere from 10 to 1,000 plants per square metre of floor space to make a meaningful difference in air quality. To put that in perspective, purifying a small 10-foot by 10-foot room would require about a thousand plants to achieve the same air-cleaning rate as a standard ventilation system. For the average 1,500-square-foot home, that could mean cramming in over 680 plants. It quickly becomes clear that relying on houseplants for air purification is simply not practical.
What the Science Says Today
The current scientific consensus is that while houseplants are technically capable of absorbing pollutants, their impact in a typical home is negligible. The American Lung Association has stated that the verdict is in: houseplants do not improve indoor air quality in a significant way. This doesn't mean the original NASA study was flawed; its findings were simply misinterpreted and overgeneralized. Researchers were surprised to find that much of the pollutant removal was actually done by the microorganisms in the soil, not just the plant's leaves. However, even accounting for this, the effect is too small to compete with basic ventilation. Opening a window or running an exhaust fan remains a far more effective strategy for improving indoor air.
So, Should You Keep Your Plants?
Absolutely. While they may not be the air-purifying powerhouses we once thought, the benefits of keeping houseplants are numerous and well-documented. They are aesthetically pleasing, can add humidity to dry indoor air, and have proven psychological benefits. Studies have shown that the presence of indoor plants can reduce stress, improve mood, and even boost concentration. So, while your pothos isn't scrubbing your air of toxins, it is likely making your space more pleasant and calming. It's time to appreciate our houseplants for what they truly are: beautiful, living decor that brings a touch of nature indoors and makes us feel good, rather than expecting them to function as air filters.
