Secure Your Ticket, Then Save It Offline
The foundation of any good train journey is a confirmed ticket, best booked well in advance through the official IRCTC website or its Rail Connect app. Once booked, you will receive a 10-digit PNR number, which holds all your journey details. While the confirmation
SMS and email from IRCTC are usually sufficient proof along with a valid ID, relying on them alone is a gamble. Mobile networks on trains are notoriously unreliable as the train passes through remote areas far from cell towers. The best practice is to save an offline copy of your ticket. On the IRCTC app or website, go to your 'Booked Ticket History', view your ticket, and use the 'Save' or 'Print' option to download it as a PDF to your phone. This ensures you have your details ready for the TTE, regardless of internet access.
Navigate Luggage Rules with Ease
Indian Railways has specific luggage allowances based on your travel class. For instance, passengers in AC First Class can carry up to 70 kg for free, while those in AC 2-Tier get 50 kg, and passengers in AC 3-Tier, Sleeper Class, and AC Chair Car are allowed 40 kg. Those in Second Class have a 35 kg allowance. Exceeding these free limits can result in charges, typically 1.5 times the standard luggage rate. To avoid last-minute stress, it’s wise to pack light. Ensure your bags also meet the size dimensions—generally, a suitcase should not exceed 100cm x 60cm x 25cm to fit under the berths, though stricter size limits of 55cm x 45cm x 22.5cm apply in some AC coaches. If you have excess or bulky luggage, you can book it in advance at the station's luggage office.
Plan Your Meals and Water in Advance
Gone are the days when your only food options were the train's pantry car or risky platform vendors. IRCTC's e-catering service has transformed onboard dining. Using the 'Food on Track' app or the eCatering website, you can enter your PNR number to see a list of FSSAI-approved restaurants available at upcoming stations on your route. You can pre-order everything from thalis to pizzas and have them delivered to your seat. Payment can be made online or via cash on delivery. For this to work seamlessly, it's best to order at least a few hours in advance. Some services even let you order by calling the helpline at 1323 if you don't have internet access. For hydration, carrying a reusable water bottle is a smart move, as you can refill it at stations. You can also pre-book packaged drinking water along with your meal.
Prepare for the Digital Blackout
Poor connectivity is a given on most long-distance train routes in India. Instead of getting frustrated, prepare for it. Before your journey, download everything you might need for entertainment—movies, music, podcasts, and ebooks. A fully charged power bank is non-negotiable. Beyond entertainment, think about practical information. Take screenshots of your hotel booking, cab details, and any important contact numbers. Having this information stored locally on your device means you won't be stranded if you arrive at your destination with no signal. Apps like 'Where is my train' can work offline using GPS, helping you track your journey without depending on mobile data. This mindset of offline preparedness is the key to a truly relaxed journey.
