Most of India’s powerful earth observation satellites, like those in the Cartosat and RISAT series, operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), just a few hundred kilometres above the surface. They circle the globe rapidly, capturing incredibly detailed images.
However, this means they can only see a specific location for a few minutes at a time before moving on, with hours or even days passing before they revisit the same spot. EOS-05 is different. It operates from a geosynchronous orbit, a staggering 36,000 kilometres away. At this specific altitude, its orbital period matches Earth's rotation. The result? It remains parked over the Indian subcontinent, offering a constant, unblinking view.
From Snapshots to Live Video
The key advantage of a geosynchronous position is persistence. While LEO satellites provide high-resolution snapshots at periodic intervals, EOS-05 offers something closer to live video. It can provide repeated imagery of a specific region of interest, such as India and its surroundings, enabling near-real-time monitoring. Think of it as the difference between a security guard doing hourly patrols versus a dedicated CCTV camera that never looks away. This ability to continuously watch large areas transforms how India can track rapidly developing situations, from military movements to fast-moving weather systems. This capability is a significant leap from relying on periodic satellite revisits.
