What Exactly is a 'Gym-Cation'?
A gym-cation isn't just a holiday where you happen to use the hotel gym. It's a trip where fitness is a central reason for going. Coined by travel platform Skyscanner as a major trend for 2027, it represents a move towards holidays that actively integrate
a person's fitness routine, rather than disrupting it. This can range from choosing a hotel specifically for its high-quality fitness facilities to planning a trip around a specific fitness event or retreat. Unlike broader wellness travel, which often focuses on relaxation and mental health, the gym-cation is more targeted, prioritising physical activity, structured workouts, and performance-oriented goals. It’s about returning from your break not just rested, but measurably fitter and stronger.
The Forces Driving the Fitness-First Holiday
This trend is being powered by a fundamental shift in how people, particularly younger generations like Gen Z and Millennials, view health. For many, fitness is no longer an optional activity but a core part of their identity and daily life. A vacation that forces a pause on this routine can feel counterproductive. Recent studies highlight this change; one report noted 53% of travellers prioritise hotels with good fitness facilities, a number that's even higher among younger demographics. Another found 91% of Gen Z travellers are more likely to book a hotel with wellness offerings and nutritious breakfast options. In India, this is especially pronounced, with one report finding 47% of Gen Z travellers had built their last vacation around a health activity. The rise of fitness influencers on platforms like Instagram and YouTube has also made an impact, normalising the idea of maintaining and even enhancing fitness levels while travelling.
More Than Just a Hotel Gym
The hotel gym, once a forgotten basement room with a lone treadmill, is now a key selling point. Hotels are responding by building state-of-the-art fitness centres that rival commercial gyms, offering everything from Peloton bikes and advanced strength equipment to dedicated yoga studios and functional training zones. Some hotels are even creating entire 'wellness wings' with in-room fitness gear. But the trend extends beyond the hotel. It includes travelling to compete in fitness races like HYROX, where a significant percentage of participants travel from other cities. It also encompasses boutique fitness retreats dedicated to specific disciplines like boxing, Pilates, or high-intensity interval training (HIIT). ClassPass, a fitness app, noted that the number of users booking sessions away from their home city has more than doubled recently, showing a clear desire to integrate local fitness experiences into travel plans.
The Indian Context and Global Hotspots
The gym-cation trend is gaining significant traction in India, where wellness tourism is a rapidly expanding market. A 2025 report noted India's fitness tourism market hit ₹9,300 crore, with activities like trekking in Ladakh and surfing in Goa becoming popular fitness-centric holidays for young Indians. Globally, some cities are emerging as hotspots for fitness-conscious travellers. According to Skyscanner data tracking the use of the 'fitness centre' filter, Mumbai is one of the top five destinations, alongside Bangkok, New York, Phuket, and Seoul. This indicates that travellers are actively seeking out destinations where they know they can maintain their active lifestyle. As the demand grows, expect to see more travel companies and hotels in India and abroad curating packages and experiences specifically for the gym-cationer.
