An Unprecedented Investment Wave
India is witnessing a historic surge in data center development, with installed capacity expected to more than quadruple by 2030. Projections show capacity could leap from 1.5 GW in 2025 to over 6.5 GW by the end of the decade. This expansion is fueled
by tens of billions of dollars in committed investments. Global hyperscalers like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft, and Google are leading the charge, collectively pledging around $67.5 billion. For instance, AWS plans to invest over $21 billion in cloud infrastructure between 2026 and 2030, building on its existing hubs in Mumbai and Hyderabad. Not to be outdone, domestic conglomerates and IT firms are also making significant moves. HCLTech recently announced a $1.48 billion plan for an AI-focused data center in Odisha, highlighting a trend of Indian companies entering the infrastructure space to capitalize on the boom.
The Forces Driving the Boom
Several powerful forces are converging to create this perfect storm of investment. At the forefront is the sheer explosion of data. India has over 800 million internet users, and data consumption is forecast to grow exponentially with the widespread adoption of 5G, e-commerce, and streaming services. Government policies are another critical driver, particularly the emphasis on data localization, which mandates that certain types of data must be stored within India's borders. This has made it essential for global companies to build local capacity. Furthermore, the global race for artificial intelligence supremacy is playing a massive role. AI workloads require immense computational power, and companies are building specialized, AI-ready data centers to train and deploy their models, with India emerging as a key market.
Beyond the Traditional Hubs
While Mumbai and Chennai have historically been the epicenters of India's data center market due to their status as financial hubs and hosts of subsea cable landing stations, the growth is now becoming more geographically diverse. Cities like Hyderabad, Pune, and the National Capital Region (NCR) are rapidly emerging as strong secondary hubs. Hyderabad, in particular, is attracting significant hyperscaler interest thanks to supportive policies and land availability. This expansion into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities is also driven by the rise of edge computing—a model where smaller, modular data centers are built closer to end-users to reduce latency for services like online gaming and the Internet of Things (IoT).
Economic Ripples and New Challenges
This infrastructure build-out is creating a significant ripple effect across the economy. The construction and operation of these facilities are creating jobs in fields ranging from IT and engineering to security and maintenance. For businesses, especially startups and SMEs, the increased availability of local, low-latency cloud services lowers the barrier to digital transformation and innovation. However, this rapid growth is not without challenges. Data centers are incredibly power-hungry; their electricity demand is projected to surge from about 1 GW currently to over 13 GW by 2031-32. They also consume vast amounts of water for cooling, raising sustainability concerns in a country already facing water stress. Ensuring a steady supply of green energy and finding sustainable cooling solutions will be critical for the industry's long-term success.
