A New Look for a New Mission
Recent spy photos have captured a near-production prototype of what looks to be the next-generation 790 Adventure. The most dramatic change is a move away from the controversial low-slung fuel pods. Instead, the test mule features a more traditional,
albeit wider, fuel tank and sharper body panels, giving the bike a slimmer, more cohesive, and sportier profile. The front end has also been completely redesigned with a new compact projector LED headlight, similar to the styling cues seen on prototypes of the upcoming 990 Adventure. These visual updates suggest a significant evolution for the model, which has had a complex history, being replaced by the 890 before returning as a more accessible option in KTM’s lineup.
Upgrades for the Long Haul
Several new features point directly to improved touring capability. A taller windscreen is clearly visible on the test bike, designed to reduce wind buffeting on long highway stretches. Another key ergonomic shift is the move to a single-piece seat, replacing the split-seat design of the current model, which could enhance comfort for both rider and pillion over many hours. While the move to a conventional tank might seem like a departure, the new, wider front fairing hints that KTM may be able to maintain a similar fuel capacity, crucial for long-range travel. The current model is already known for its impressive fuel range, with some riders covering over 400 kilometres on a single tank.
Preserving Its Off-Road Soul
While the focus appears to be on improving road manners, KTM seems committed to preserving the 790’s legendary off-road prowess. The underlying architecture of the prototype looks familiar, with the frame and swingarm appearing to match the current, well-proven LC8c chassis. The test mule was spotted with a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel setup, a combination that underscores a serious off-road focus. The engine is expected to be the same 799cc parallel-twin, which produces around 95 horsepower and 87 Nm of torque—plenty of grunt for technical trails. The suspension is handled by WP Apex components, and new WP-branded brake callipers are also visible, suggesting KTM is sticking with high-quality parts to ensure the bike remains 'Ready to Race' on any terrain.
Finding Its Place in the Lineup
This updated 790 Adventure appears poised to carve out a distinct identity within KTM’s increasingly crowded adventure range. By becoming more road and touring-focused, it creates clearer separation from the more hardcore, off-road-oriented 890 Adventure R and the anticipated 990 Adventure. The prototype retains the current 5-inch TFT display, rather than the larger, more advanced screen seen on 990 test bikes, indicating KTM will continue to differentiate its models by technology and equipment levels to hit specific price points. This strategy allows KTM to offer a highly capable but more comfortable and potentially more affordable entry into its mid-size adventure family. Given the near-production look of the prototype, an official debut in spring 2027 seems likely, just ahead of the prime riding season.
