This was the first study of its kind to directly explore whether swapping a gas stove for an electric one could lead to a reduction in asthma symptoms.
What Is Nitrogen Dioxide and Why Is It a Concern?
Nitrogen dioxide, or NO2, is a pollutant gas that forms when fuels are burned at high temperatures. While often associated with outdoor smog from vehicle exhaust, it's also a significant indoor pollutant, primarily from appliances that burn natural gas without outside vents, like kitchen stoves. The Broader Gas vs. Electric Debate

Burning gas also releases other potentially harmful pollutants, including formaldehyde, benzene (a known carcinogen), and carbon monoxide. Electric and induction stoves, on the other hand, do not produce these combustion byproducts because they use electricity to generate heat directly. In the study, many of the older homes required expensive electrical system upgrades before an electric stove could be installed.
