Train travel in Kerala entered a new era of scenic luxury on October 22 with the trial run of Southern Railway’s first Vistadome coach on the Kollam-Sengottai line. This journey promises a sensory feast through the Western Ghats.
A Window to the Western Ghats
Southern Railway has attached
a state-of-the-art Vistadome coach to the Madurai-Guruvayur Express, transforming the journey through the historic mountain pass into a premier tourist experience. These specially designed coaches are all about the view, featuring massive glass windows, a transparent glass roof, and seats that can rotate 180 degrees. This allows passengers to get an immersive, panoramic perspective of the lush landscapes, winding tracks, and mountain scenery of the Sengottai gap, which connects Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The coach itself accommodates 42 passengers in executive-style chairs, offering a comfortable and luxurious way to soak in the natural splendour.
The Journey Through Aryankavu Pass
The highlight of this route is the breathtaking stretch between Punalur and Sengottai, which cuts through the Aryankavu Pass. As the train ascends into the Western Ghats, passengers are treated to a spectacle of dense forests, deep valleys, and cascading waterfalls. The region is rich in biodiversity and natural beauty, with notable attractions like the Palaruvi and Kazhuthurutty waterfalls visible along the way. The train schedule has been intentionally planned with stops at multiple smaller stations, allowing travellers to fully appreciate the region's scenery. The journey provides a unique daylight opportunity to witness this terrain, which many other services cross after dark.
The Star Attraction: A Bridge of 13 Arches
A true marvel of engineering and a centrepiece of the journey is the Pathimoonu Kannara Palam, or the 13-Arch Bridge. This historic, British-era structure, built in 1904, is a major landmark on the Kollam-Sengottai line. Located near Kazhuthurutty, the bridge stands on 13 granite pillars, each nearly a hundred feet tall, connecting two hillocks. Constructed using traditional methods with limestone, rocks, and jaggery, it has stood for over a century as a testament to the engineering prowess of its time. Passing over this architectural wonder, with the River Kazhuthurutti flowing below, is one of the most anticipated moments for passengers in the Vistadome coach.
Tunnels, Curves, and Natural Splendor
Beyond the famous bridge, the railway line itself is an adventure. The route features numerous sharp curves and historic tunnels that add to the thrill of the journey. One significant tunnel is the Aryankavu–Puliyara tunnel, also known as the Kottavasal Tunnel, through which the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border passes. Its entrances are still marked with the conch emblem of the former Travancore state. To navigate the steep gradients of the ghat section, a special 'banking locomotive' is attached to the rear of the train between Punalur and Bhagavathipuram, assisting its climb. This combination of natural beauty and railway heritage makes the trip a delight for tourists, families, and railway enthusiasts alike.
The Future of the Service
The inaugural run of the Vistadome coach on October 22 was met with significant enthusiasm, with tickets for the initial services selling out quickly. The service is currently operating on a trial basis until mid–January 2027 to gauge passenger demand. While the response has been overwhelmingly positive, there are some infrastructural challenges. Officials have noted that several station platforms along the route are too short to accommodate longer trains, which could limit future expansion of the service without impacting regular commuter coaches. However, the trial is seen as a major step toward unlocking the tourism potential of this scenic corridor, blending transport with an unforgettable travel experience.
