A New Way to Measure 'Attractiveness'
The 2026 Global Tourism City Attractiveness Index offers a fresh perspective on what makes a city a desirable destination. Conducted by Yanolja Research with university partners, this study moves beyond simple visitor numbers. Instead, it analysed millions
of online conversations and social media posts in 14 languages to gauge how travellers actually feel about 200 different cities. The ranking measures two key things: 'cognitive awareness', which is how much buzz a city generates, and 'affective attractiveness', which captures the positive feelings, sentiment, and memorable experiences associated with it. In short, it’s a ranking based on global perception and genuine visitor enthusiasm.
The Top Spot: New York City
Taking the crown as the most attractive city in the world for 2026 is New York. The Big Apple secured the number one position due to its powerful combination of immense global visibility and overwhelmingly positive visitor sentiment. While its iconic landmarks are a huge draw, the index reveals that the city's appeal runs much deeper. It scores high in providing unique experiences and fostering a sense of excitement that travellers share widely online. Following New York in the top ten are Paris, Osaka, Kyoto, and Seoul, rounding out a top five that balances Western cultural capitals with dynamic Asian hubs.
Europe's Enduring Charm
Classic European destinations continue to hold powerful sway over travellers' hearts. Paris ranked number two, praised for its romantic image and rich cultural offerings. London and Rome also secured spots in the top ten, at number six and seven respectively. However, the report highlights that their high ranking isn't just about history. These cities succeed by constantly reinventing themselves while maintaining their unique character, offering a blend of familiar sights and new experiences that keep visitors engaged and talking long after their trip has ended.
The Rise of Asian Powerhouses
One of the biggest stories from the 2026 ranking is the remarkable performance of Asian cities. This trend is driven by what the index calls 'affective attractiveness'—the ability to create emotionally satisfying and highly shareable experiences. Japan, in particular, stands out as a tourism giant. Osaka and Kyoto placed third and fourth in the overall ranking, while Okinawa also made the top ten at number nine. The strong showing is further bolstered by Seoul at number five and Bangkok at number eight, confirming that many of the world's most talked-about and loved travel experiences are now found in Asia.
Japan's Secret: Emotional Appeal
Digging deeper into the results reveals Japan's exceptional strength. Cities like Osaka and Kyoto were ranked number one and two globally specifically for 'affectiveness', meaning they are masters at generating positive feelings and lasting memories for visitors. This wasn't just limited to the big names; eight Japanese cities made it into the global top 50, including Tokyo, Nagoya, and Fukuoka. The index suggests this is due to a winning combination of unique culinary scenes, deep cultural experiences, natural beauty, and warm hospitality, which together create a powerful emotional pull for international tourists.
Where Does India Stand?
For those wondering about India's presence on the global stage, the report offers promising news. According to data from the index, Delhi made a notable appearance, ranking 36th in the world for attractiveness. While it did not break into the top tier, its inclusion reflects a growing global awareness and appreciation for the capital's unique blend of history, culture, and vibrant energy. The ranking suggests that as more travellers seek authentic and profound experiences, Indian cities have a significant opportunity to climb higher by showcasing their rich cultural narratives and diverse offerings to a global audience.
