The New Rule: Head of Family Based Updates
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a resident-friendly option for updating the address on your Aadhaar card. This method, known as the Head of Family (HoF) based update, allows individuals to change their address using
the Aadhaar of a relative they live with. This is a significant change from the traditional process, which strictly requires proof of address (PoA) documents—like a rent agreement or utility bill—to be in the applicant's own name. The HoF facility is designed for people who may not have such documents immediately after moving, such as a spouse or child moving in with family, or a young professional staying with relatives.
How It Simplifies The Process
The core benefit of the HoF method is that it bypasses the need for you to have a document like a registered rent agreement or an electricity bill in your name. Instead, it leverages the existing, verified address of a family member. Anyone over the age of 18 can act as the Head of Family for this purpose. The entire process can be done online via the 'My Aadhaar' portal, which is a major convenience. It streamlines the situation for millions who relocate for work, marriage, or education and find themselves in a classic catch-22: needing an address proof to get services, but needing services (like a gas connection) to get an address proof.
Understanding The Key Limitations
While this rule is a major step forward, its limits are important to understand. Firstly, this process is specifically for updating your Aadhaar card address. While an updated Aadhaar is the most powerful address proof for almost all other services like opening bank accounts or getting a new SIM, you will still need to update each of those services individually. Secondly, the Head of Family must explicitly consent to the request. After you apply, the HoF receives an SMS and has 30 days to approve your request by logging into the My Aadhaar portal. If they do not approve it or reject it, the application is closed, and the fee is not refunded. Finally, this doesn't work for all official documents. For instance, changing your passport address requires a separate application for passport reissue with its own set of accepted address proofs.
A Step-by-Step Guide to the HoF Process
To use this facility, the applicant initiates the process through the 'My Aadhaar' portal (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in). You will need to enter the Aadhaar number of your Head of Family for validation. After the HoF's Aadhaar is verified, you must upload a Proof of Relationship document. Accepted documents include a ration card, marksheet, marriage certificate, or passport that mentions the names of both the applicant and the HoF. If a relationship proof document is not available, UIDAI allows the applicant to submit a self-declaration from the HoF in a prescribed format. A fee of ₹50 is charged for the service. Once paid, a Service Request Number (SRN) is generated, and the request is forwarded to the HoF for their consent.
The Documents That Still Matter
Even with the HoF provision, certain documents remain crucial. The most important is the Proof of Relationship document, which establishes the connection between you and the Head of Family. Both the applicant and the HoF must have their mobile numbers linked to their respective Aadhaar cards, as the process relies on OTPs for verification at multiple stages. For those not using the HoF method, the traditional list of Proof of Address documents is still valid. This includes registered rent agreements, utility bills (not older than three months), bank passbooks, and property tax receipts. It is always wise to get one of these standard documents in your name as soon as possible after moving, as it provides a direct and universally accepted proof of your residence.
